just an update from san jose, ca. to las vegas, nv $75 each way take in mind san jose gas is 4.15 per, while i was in nv it was 3.69 per. my average while on crusie control of between 70-73mph was 37mpg according to the dash
My low was 24, high was 39, 2600 miles and average of 31. Mostly city some highway, I shift high up on the tach though I have not done bouncy off limiter yet.
I don't think I could ever drive hard enough to get under 30 MPG's in this car.
I tried my hardest, just as an experiement, to get to 40 mpg's by crusing as much as possible and shifting into high gears whenever I could & taking off slow & all that crap & I only got 35.
So on the next tank I drove without trying at all, shifted at 4K rpm's when accelerating, drove up some steep mountain roads, used the air conditioning a little bit, and I got 39.5. So I'm not sure how those "hypermile" people do their thing, but it sure didn't work for me................doesn't really make sense..............the more fun I try to have driving it the better mpg's I get................seems to be the opposite of how it should be.
Any more automatics out there want to list their mpgs. The dealer around here carries all autos and it might be my only choice for that reason and the fact i have 2 kids learning to drive, dont want to start them on a standard. thanks.
Lowest I've gotten is 18mpg, best I've gotten is 31. Normal is 30ish...
4200 miles on my car I think. Shifting at 4-5k usually, cruising at 75-85 on highway ...I hate second gear with a passion![]()
How much are u guys filling up in gallons of gas? I was blinking on the last bar with less than 30 miles to go and it only took 8.9 gallons. I only fill it up until the pump stops. I'm getting between 35-40 mpg, I shift between 2.5k and 3k. Unless I need to speed up to get on the freeway.
I've got an automatic and I can't get my MPG's to break 30; I drive it easy (shift between 2k and 3k) and do 50% highway driving, but even driving @ 60 mph on the interstate I can't get any better than 29 mpg (my highest tank.) City average is ~24, I carry no extra weight in the car, tires are inflated to spec...I feel I should be getting better numbers even though I've got an automatic.![]()

I honestly think that forcing a shift between 2 and 3K and keeping it @60 on the interstate actually hurts this car's MPGs. I know that seems completely counter-intuitive, but on my manual I shift between 3 and 4K... usually around 3.5K, and I tend to keep it at 70 on the highway. Over 54 fuel-ups i'm averaging (legitimately averaging... click on my fuelly link below) 34.5 MPG. I've never gotten below 31 MPG... even doing all city in the dead of winter. And on my trip to NY and back I got between 38 and 41 MPG (again... legitimately).
Don't be afraid to drive this car. It likes (and in some cases needs) to get into higher RPMs. If I can give Mazda credit for one thing, it's that they absolutely nailed the MPG ratings on this car, and they were actually a little conservative. They advertise "up to 39 mpg hwy" and a few of us have been able to get better than that. But the advertised low end IS in the 20's... so getting 24 with an auto in the city doesn't blow me away. Plus you're in NC, right? So hot, humid, you're probably using the A/C, it can be a little hilly at times... just speculation.
Oh... and keeping my tires inflated to 40 PSI all the way around helped a lot on that highway trip...so if you can stand a little more road noise/feeling, I'd bump it up.
Sorry for the long post, but since I took a 102 horsepower loss when I bought this car, my new obsession has been MPGs.
