Any suggestions as to why I am getting the following results.

no matter if I go fast or if I am careful keep rpms low using manual mode.
I am still stuck with the 15-18mpg wether is highway or city I get the same results I am confused because should you not get higher mpg on highway.

anyone having same issue?

however u wana look at it, thats pretty decent mileage. i have noticed that unless i do extensive highway driving, im talking like somewhere between 100+ miles in a trip, my gas mileage will not make that huge jump you are expecting. the only times my mpg will jump into 20+ is when im putting 150 miles on it 1 way.

even if i drive this car 50/50, im still getting at best 18 maybe 19mpg. id say ur right in the ball park of the normal mpg and wouldnt worry about it. if those numbers bother you, then, i guess you will just stay aggrevated with it.

whoever said I was aggrivated? Concerned yes but not aggrivated I thought maybe something was wrong with the car since some people here are reporting higher mpg 20+ (drunk)

Horsepower costs money. Yes you have a 4 banger but it is turbocharged and requires more gas. Pretty simple really. :)

Comparing 18mpg figures to 20mpg figures is all in the driver.(drive)

With all due respect, one of the reasons I mod this forum is I have many years of experience building and racing cars. If I appear to be a "Show off" I am terribly sorry...that is not my intention. I am a kinda guy that just gives you the bottom line. EPA figures are never spot-on...they are meant to be a guideline when shopping...that is all. Now don't be so sensitive. :)

Yep. I have 3000 miles on mine and I'm still getting 12 mpg.

Sucks because premium is now $3.13 here. That's $50 bucks to fill a tank now.

Gas mileage hasn't changed one single bit the last 3000 miles. Breakin period my arse.

Fine. Then tell Mazda to QUIT LYING about their MPG. Put the MPG to 12-15 MPG City, 15-18 MPG highway. STOP LYING ABOUT 18 - 23.

The 18 to 23 is a total and outright LIE.

Period.

Sorry, just noticed this thread. This is a copy-paste from another one that I just wrote:

I got 20 mpg on my last fill-up with about 60-40 highway/city driving. I live in Florida, so my A/C is running about 70% of the time. I also have a lead-foot, so a lot of the highway driving was at 80+.

My first few tanks were where you are at, but has been slowly getting better with each fill-up. I am just about to break 2,000 miles and am hoping for 22mpg this tank (pipe-dreams)

Superstretch we differ I am already at 4300 miles did 1st oil change at 3000 even though its supposed to be at 5k i did it anyway same results.

I do have a minor update i been in the latest test auto from 1-4 then when i switch to manual 30mph 5th 6th gear i engage at around 40mph
in this test I have receieved 285 miles on 93 octane and thats trying to keep rpms under 2k

RELAX!
Mazda doesn't set EPA figures...the US Government does.(usa)

Hope this helps:

Your mileage has varied
For years, consumers have groused that their new car simply can't match the gas mileage estimates displayed on the window sticker or featured in advertisements. The typical gut reaction has been to blame the carmaker, attributing the shortfall to an overenthusiastic marketing department. We see this type of comment all the time in our forums, and it seems that no company — even hybrid car manufacturers — is immune.

What consumers may not know is that the U.S. government, via the EPA, specifies all aspects of fuel economy ratings and how the mpg tests are carried out, including the "City" and "Highway" driving patterns. Those patterns are simulated on machines called dynamometers (dynos) to make the results accurate and repeatable. EPA's influence even penetrates to the design of the window sticker itself, right down to the point size and fonts used. So if the numbers seem too "optimistic" compared to real-world results, the manufacturers themselves aren't necessarily guilty as charged.

The reason why fuel economy estimates have been coming out too high is simple: The EPA-specified testing and reporting method has not been updated since 1985. Since then, a lot has changed. For one thing, the former national speed limit of 55 mph has been abolished. So instead of topping out at 60 mph, the new highway rating test includes speeds up to 80 mph.

And then there are added scenarios the old tests never included. Things like very hot and very cold temperatures and driving with the air-conditioner and defroster on are now part of the testing regimen. Acceleration rates in the old tests were funeral-procession sedate, owing to the limits of the dynos used when the tests were originally conceived in the '70s. More spirited, but realistic, acceleration and braking rates are now specified.

Maybe the difference is the manual/auto thing. I'm always in manual mode, so maybe that makes a difference. ????

Hmm... I use the manual for hills, or to keep at a certain speed without having to use the brakes, or, to keep the rpms up on a hill because the CX7 wants to stay in 5th gear and so you can feel it bogging. Interesting that maybe the MPG is a difference between using manual or auto.

I don't think they are lying...I'm looking right at my sticker and it says City: 19 HWY: 24 but below that it says, "Actual mileage will very...16 and 22 in the city and between 20 and 28 on the highway."

This seems right to me because whenever I drive the car it gets like 16-18 MPG but whenever my wife drives it, it gets like 21-23 MPG. This tells me its all about who is driving it and how they are driving it.

Like I said...the US Government sets the EPA figures. (hand)

doesnt city driving EPA rating set for like 28 miles an hour?

and then highway is like 48? i read that somewhere, dont remember where..

gas consumption is all about throttle position

if your using the manual mode shift b/w 2 and 3 rpms which in my opinion, and from what ive heard gets the best gas mileage

if your hitting WOT to get to 40 miles an hour in the city, or in your case boosting everytime you go from a stoplight the MPG will be pretty low

i as a highschool student on a low budget for my car am starting to get wise about gas because i live in socal. as nice as my intake sounds at 3k rpms, its not worth the gas its costing me.

Oh boy....I actually calculated 29MPG on a trip from San Antonio, TX to Waynesville, MO. I did have a heck of a tail wind though and speed was 75-80MPH the whole time. Other tanks gave me 22-25MPG.
Also, of very high importance....I was running Motorcraft 5W-20 oil....dealer installed. This is very significant on MPGs!
