Maybe im just an idiot, but i can not for the life of me figure out what Mp3 stands for. I know its not the music files, it has something to do with the Protege I believe.

actually you just answered yourself. The Mazda Protege MP3 is INDEED named after the music file that the stock Kenwood system can play.
Most of the time the simplest answer is the best answer
as a side note/glossary: MP3 stands for MPEG Layer 3.

So, is there an MP3 model Proteg? or is it an option, and if you get it, you can be deemed an 'elite' MP3ist?

sorry but ya missed out the MP3 was a 2001 model year only. 1500 in the states and 250 in canada i believe are the correct numbers. If you wanna get the same looks as the mp3 model with a little more "boost" you can hold off till fall and opt for the Mazdaspeed protege which is turbo charged as has a little nicer stereo and some other inteiror gadgets.

MP3 DOES NOT stand for 'Mazda Protege3', it simply refers to the MP3 music file playing capability of its sound system.
However people here DO refer to their Mazda Protege5 as 'MP5'.
so, the acronyms MP3 and MP5, though only differ by a single number, have no direct relationship from one to the other.

It has a bevy of differences including body kit, sound system, wheels, suspension and some engine tuning. The only way to be defined as an MP3 owner is to go out and see if you can find one of the 1500 rare MP3s for sale.
