Money off???

First off I would like to say hi to all. I am very interested in buying the Mazda 3s but have no idea what to expect on dealing on one. I called a local dealer yesterday and the best I could get off was like $475.00. I thought that was ridiculous. My dad says he starts dealing on a car with 10% off MSRP immediately or he walks. Any suggestions, I live in Wisconsin by the way. This is what I want.

2004 Mazda 3s
Titanium Gray
Black Leather
automatic
ABS package
Sport Package
Moonroof/CD package
Xenon Package
rear spoiler

On the internet mazdausa.com says this is $21,125 MSRP plus $520.00 delivery = $21,645 Dealer said he would give it to me at $21,188 Any ideas or OTD prices others have been paying would be helpful. Thank you

That's highway robbery. You should always start at invoice and work up, not from MSRP down. There are people buying them in the mid-teens, there's no reason for you to pay over 20.

Look around on the board and you'll find about a half-dozen threads on pricing.

The dealer told me that it is because the car just came out and not alot of room to move. I thought it was robbery also. I am not going to spend 22g's on a car and only get off 500. I will not buy the car if that is the case just out of principal. Thanks for the reply.

theres a big diffrence between calling a dealer, and actually walking into the store. their not going to give you any big discount over the phone. get off your butt, walk in there and show them that u are serious.

sticker on my car was 21000.. i payed 16000.... u can work it... go to a diff dealer. make up a story about how the other dealer was gonna give it to you for such and such a price...see what they say.. then go back to the first one and do the same.. see what hapends.

What the ....

17,200 for a fully loaded 5DR. Sticker was 19,800. As GW said start at the invoice and work up, and one other piece of advice. NEVER negotiate using the monthly payment, you negotiate the price of the car...

calling a dealer wont do you s***. you have to show up. there is absolutely no way to negotiate over the phone. reason being, 99 percent of people that say they are interested in cars never show up, so the dealer wont deal with you over the phone, its a waste of time. show up, because then they feel they "have" you and will work with you. this is coming from a former car salesman.

I know about the whole phone thing, better to go in person. I just wanted to get the ball rolling when at work. I am going to go in person to a dealership or two wednesday and thursday. Wish me luck guys, I get pissed off too easy with the whole dickering of cars. What do you guys think I should start at for a price? MSRP on the internet through mazdausa.com was $21,145 not including the $520 delivery fee. So A total of $21,665. What should I start dealing at??? Thanks guys

I realize this. I did stop at a dealer and talked and looked over the car with him. Test drove it, really liked it alot. Told him that I want to buy within the next couple of days. I also stated to him I start my dealing at 10% of sticker. So 10% of sticker of $21,665 will be at least $2100.00. I told him to call me if he could at least start at 10% of sticker if not, don't bother calling me. This was 2 days ago and haven't heard from him since.

As others have hinted at, look up the invoice and shoot over it a tad bit instead of hacking off MSRP.

Make it known that you know what they're paying for the car. Show them you know what the MSRP and invoice are.

If you are planning on making a down payment, cash speaks loudly to salesmen, so don't be afraid to let them know. My salesman didn't take me seriously at all when I came in (mainly just looking) and talking about hitting a certain number on my trade-in, but a couple days later when I sold my car and had the money in hand, it literally took 2 minutes to work a deal.

But dealers won't show the invoice. Atleast in my experience. I can't say I was ripped on WRX, $25k car for $21,220. (thumb)

Good thing your dad doesn't live in Canada, he'd be taking the bus if wanted a 10% discount.

You can look up invoice price on any number of web sites. kbb.com, edmunds.com, msn autos, etc.

Tell them you'll give them $500 over invoice and go from there.

i got my 5 door with cd changed and moon roof for 19,292.80 out the door. i think he said it was 500 over invoice, not sure. i think msrp was 18,150.

Have you tried talking to the internet department of dealerships? They usually don't want to spend a lot of time negotiating and they'll usually give you a pretty low price right off the bat without having to go to the dealership. When I emailed a bunch of dealers they all gave me prices well below MSRP. Now I'm in a deal with a mazda 3s equiped similarly to yours for $150 under invoice. If your eligible for the college grad or mazda loyalty program don't mention it until you have a price your happy with, then spring it on them and you have 500 dollars more for a down payment. Good luck!

I was dealing with a guy at a local dealer and he said he was going to locate one for me. Called back and said he found one exactly the way I want mine equipped but the dealer will not do a trade with him cause they have people lined up to buy this car. Salesman bulls*** or what? He did however give me this guys name at this other dealership to call if I wanted it otherwise they could order one for me. I did do an inventory check at this dealership and it stats they do have the car I want on there lot. I am going to call today and offer 100 over invoice and go from there. I want to buy like tomorrow but am getting frustrated. Thanks for all the replies.

just ask for the invoice, ive seen it for every car ive bought. and if another dealer has it, go to that dealer and deal with him.

Again, you can find the invoice on a host of internet webpages, you don't need to rely on the dealership to provide this information.

Although... asking to see the invoice may be a good way to see if they are willing to "play ball" with you.

If you go in there armed with the web invoice prices and then they show you something different, then they might be trying to pull one over on you.

Do you know how far away your dealership is from the port? The reason why I'm asking is because dealerships will have their cars in their inventory before the car gets there if it is in the port. You may have to wait a long time depending on the transportation agency, how far away the dealership is, port accessories installed (the spoiler is one right???), etc.
