mobil1 (not avg oil thread)

like i said, not an average "which oil is better" sort of thing, mostly a gripe

so my 3k miles is up and i go to wallyworld (walmart to some) to get some mobil1 full synth 5w30, which is purely my choice so don't hijack me. i go there because they're the only place i've found that is for one cheap, AND sells oil in 5qt jugs, so it only leaves me to buy a single 1qt jug as well, and i don't hate their choices in filters so i buy there too.

well the first wallyworld i went to was out, and the other mobil oil lines were kinda bare too, but i pushed on to another wallyworld, and then another. no mobil1 5w30!?!? so i thought to myself i'd bite the bullet and go to a pepboys, which i would end up paying more for due to the fact they only have qt sizes, or maybe even 4qt sizes. they're out too!?

broke down and asked a guy at pep boys "what's up with mobil1" and he tells me there was a storm in texas however long ago (obviously between my last oil change and now) that has slowed processing or whatever. and their website confirms

anyone else having this problem? im only 100 miles over due (i do 3,000), but i'd really like to not have to switch brands.

If you really don't want to switch then just wait it out, assuming it shouldn't take too long to get it back in stock. If you're running fully synthetic and changing it at 3k then you have some play room for situations like this. It also kinda depends on how much you drive on a weekly basis though. This one is up to you.

well that sucks...that's what i use too....hope they get it back out...i'm gonna need one within a month

Interesting to know. Maybe I'll check my local Wally World now, since I am 2k from my 2nd oil change.

yea i mechandise pepsi at walmart i over heard a convo that mobil 1 was out at the warehouse until further notice, no eta on when they will be back in stock

Instead of buying a jug and a quart (of whatever flavor), buy multiple jugs. That one extra quart will cost over twice the per-quart price in jugs. For my Ram and my daughter's Camry, I buy three jugs of Hi-Mileage Pennzoil 5w-30. That leaves two quarts if needed and the total is probably less than buying two jugs and three quarts.

yup. There is a nation wide shortage of mobil 1 products supposedly. But the autozone I visited just a few days ago was fully stocked (uhm) so idk...

true, and i really think of that everytime too, but somehow i never end up doing it. and for some reason i still end up with a bunch of half full QT jugs of oil all over the garage. early stages of alzheimers i guess. but i guess the same went for when i used to dip/smoke. always got single cans or packs, never opted for the log or box. but i guess that was different cuz i kept promising myself i'd quit after i was done that pack/can

oh and i just saw/stole this from another forum after i googled

MOBIL 1 Products on Allocation

According to the October 15 edition of Jobbers World Online News Brief, selected ExxonMobil synthetic products have been put on allocation effective October 1, 2008. The announcement explained, ExxonMobil marketers (and direct served customers) were advised that allocation of Mobil 1 lubricants will take effect October 1 as a result of Hurricane Ike causing significant disruptions to supply lines to ExxonMobil Chemicals (EMC) Beaumont, TX plant. They went on to state, According to marketers, the allocation is expected to last several months and impact availability of most Mobil 1 lubricants. Allocations are said to range from 15% to 100% based on lubricant type and package. The article also implied that if you went to a local store and looked at the retail shelves at lunch time today, you might find the lubricant section slightly less stocked than normal already

looks like i may have to try a new brand of synthetic if this will last several months

If Pennzoil Platinum is available where you shop, that's a perfectly legitimate replacement for Mobil 1. Used oil analyses found on BITOG suggest that it performs just as well, at a slightly lower cost. It's all I use in both my vehicles.

They're not so fond of Castrol on BITOG, but that's mainly due to the 'scandal' years ago with Castrol calling their group III oils 'synthetic', when they're actually not. I think Mobil even sued them over it, but I'm not 100% clear on the details.

Putting the scandal aside, I used Syntec for years in my Civics and it performed fine.

The important thing with this car is to use the correct weight.

Hehe.....I was about to say, that little storm they had was called Hurricane Ike! But then I saw you found that information. I'm not sure where you guys live, but you guys have Costco's right??

That's where I've been buying my Mobil 1 oil forever. They sell 10w30 and 5w30 boxes of 6. They just recently had a $9 dollar off coupon as well. Anyway, after getting the same thing (all out of stock) at one of the Costco's, I went to another location and they were fully stocked. They only had the 10w30 in stock, but who cares...it's basically the same thing.

I picked up two boxes with the $9 coupon and will just grab some 5w30 when they restock....which should be soon. Plus it's super cheap compared to walmart or any other retailers. Ohh and you're fine running old oil, especially synthetic. It's good to about 5k miles, and all old oil really does is rob horse power. You have to be running some super ancient broken down oil for a long time before you start harming any internal engine parts (in the form of premature wear).

it's funny you should say that cuz i had asked my wife today if costcos sold oil and she told me "no". i was never really a costco person like she was in the first place (mostly bjs or sams club) and i knew she had gotten tires there before. but even after i asked her i remembered that her membership expired anyway

i work for Wally world, in the automotive dept. if you're planning on "waiting it out", don't we don't know when we're going to get more Mobil1 in. we all received e-mails saying that our stock would be depleated through the first of the year and that we would be notified when it was available again.

I just put PP into my car tonight, I've heard a lot of good things about it in these cars.

Yeah, I couldn't find any mobil1 in the chicagoland area last week. I ended up buying PP and using that.

It's depressing to drive to two walmarts in one night.
