Mishitomo w/ FMIC or Ron Davis w/ SMIC?

RBT

Ex WC Protege
Hi everyone, I'm new on this forum. I did a couple searches and didn't the info I'm looking for. Someone tell me if it as been discussed before.

I'm the co-driver/preparator of an ex-WC race car that is currently running a KLZE motor in a regional serie. We are looking at making a 2.0T conversion for HP and torque purposes. I'm currently looking at all the different possible setups.

One of my main concern is choosing between a FMIC with full width mishitomo rad or Ron Davis narrow rad with upgraded SMIC.

Keep in mind this is a road racing application and we are subject to 45 - 60 min races.

I think Doc B is running FMIC with mishitomo but according to description Ron Davis seemed to be design for road race application?

I presume FMIC should be better for air charge temperature but what about the hot air it's throwing into the radiator?

Oh yeah important info: we would be playing in the 250 whp range with possibly GT-2871RS

Thanks for your inputs

definitely do a front mount. also i use a mishimoto radiator and fan shroud w/ a gt2871r. i have the compact housing off of a gt28r and it fits perfectly. heres a photo from when i was still putting everything together.

Don't forget about the Corksport radiator, i love mine...very good fitment as well and it's much cheaper--unless you have big sponsors where money is no object...lol

My set up--corksport aluminum radiator with ION/kinetic motorsport FMIC, clocked turbo etc...

Got mine off a forum member for $200 :) ....Ya that fan shroud set-up is pretty sweet. I had to actually make my a/c fan a blow-thru because my turbo kept burning them up

Money is always a concern. Now that's what I call a real race radiator, must be better than the mishimoto for sure... The thing is we already have a brand new mishimoto that we bought as a spare last year and it asn't been modified for the KL setup yet. So we can use it as direct bolt-on for the 2.0l setup. But it's nice to know that if we have cooling issues, there's a bolt-on solution available at a reasonable price.

BTW how's that thunder manifold holding up so far? (manifold I should use is another of my biggest concern, since steedspeed doesn't make the T25 anymore... T3 with T25 adaptor plate? Might start another thread on that?)

Thanks for your inputs guys

Thunder i bought used, tig welded two cracks, machined the flange to the head, ceramic coated it, and it cracked. I used the stock cast iron Callaway one again--more dependable. I'm sure 2.0t03Speed with agree here...lol

I would go front mount intercooler and mishi rad. Thats what i will be running. I think corksport has cheap intercooler kits now too.

I was a huge proponent of the thunder. I Put it through some serious stress and alas mine has also cracked. The steed speed seems to be holding up very well, and can be found here quite cheap used. The mam tubular would be quite the find and to date have never heard of a problem. As you can see I'm the dinosaur on here and they were the only equal length tubular manifold from memory. If you were able to pair that with an original ion exhaust that would be quite nice.

Do not get the Ron Davis. Mine started leaking when it was two years old and they would not fix it, and offered me 25% off another one. Who in their right mind would spend $500 on a radiator and after it starts leaking in two years, buy the same radiator for $400?

I didn't want to block my condenser at all because it reaches 120 degrees here on occasion, and I wasn't willing to except even the slightest loss of response from the IC piping, but since there is no other option besides the Ron Davis or stock, I would say go for the FMIC. Of course, member Signature Sound actually ran two radiators, one for the engine and one for the turbo.

Have to get a steedspeed that's what I was thinking about. T-3 with adaptor or T-25? Pm'ed a member about a t-25 but didn't get any response ... must be already sold... If someone knows about a T-25 STEEDSPEED manifold for sale please let me know. They're not producing the t-25 anymore right?

Thanks again for your help guys

Leen still lists the t3 on his site and I wouldn't think it would be that hard to cut off the t3 flange and replace it with a t25. Maybe I am wrong but seems like it would be a better option than letting them go to waste.

Why does it have to be a Steedspeed?

Also, kind of rare to see someone going from a KL-ZE to a FS-DE.. usually it's the other way around :D

Steedspeed has just proven to be the most reliable of the aftermarket options.

The list price on the stock manifold from Mazda is $1500 which is just stupid, but I wonder what Mazda plans on doing with the extras since absolutely none of those are going to sell unless they are covered by an extended warranty (warranty company is going to lose out on that one). We are coming up on the end of the 10 year requirement for manufacturer's to provide replacement parts, so they'll probably want to clear the inventory. Maybe there is a way to get one from Mazda on the cheap before they toss them.

The only downfalls with the steedspeed are that it's as heavy as a house (exaggerated) and IMO it's ugly.
