My driver's side mirror housing is cracked, and I was looking at OEM replacement mirrors on ebay. Could I transfer the cap (painted black mica on my car) which is still in fine condition to the new mirror to avoid having to paint it? Is there a way to remove this cap without damaging it? I can't tell by looking at it and I haven't tried to remove it. Thanks for any help.

BTW I bought some m3 mirrors a while back when it first cracked, but I'm not sure I want to attempt installing them because it sounds like some trimming/drilling is required as well as some wire splicing and their longevity sounds questionable.

First off, I just want to make sure that we're talking about the same part. If your 'the cap' is my version of 'the front cover' .. then okay. My 'front cover' is -- if you're standing IN FRONT of the car, and looking at the sideview mirror, the 'front' part of it pops off. DGM sells CF sideview mirror covers that go over 'the front covers'.

So, if this is the part that you mean .. I'm about 95% sure that you CAN pop those off without damaging them. I was in a minor accident this past winter, in which some idiot trying to change lanes without seeing me clipped my sideview mirror with HIS sideview mirror. He wound up knocking off both my CF cover and my stock titanium mirror cover.

Amy (MSPRO), and I shall love her forever for this, happened to have an extra titanium 'front cover' lying around and sent it to me. It popped right on.

So my best guess would be to get a flat-head screwdriver or two and try to gently pry the 'front cover' off around the edges. I KNOW it comes off at least the MSP sideview mirrors.

remove the mirror glass first before getting to the cover tabs

non-painted all black (rough plastic) mirrors do not have a cover/garnish

sweet, thanks

and, yes I'm talking about the painted front cover

2nd dumb question, how do I remove the mirror glass?

I'd help you out on the mirror part because I ordered a new drivers side one off ebay due to someone breaking mine. Well the glass was broken so I didn't have to remove it. But be very careful when removing the cover, the tabs are in there really good and are a pain to get off and break very easily. Luckily the tab that broke on mine didn't break all the way and I was able to glue it back to normal.
