Metal Grinding when turning?

Has this happened to anyone else? Basically when I have my steering wheel turned all the way to the right while turning, I hear this metalic grinding. Is this normal? If not what can be wrong?

I have the stock size (215/45-17) Continental ContiSportContact 2. I'll have my mechanic check it out next friday to see what happened.

If there's a problem with the CV (just a guess), there's a good chance the boot's torn and there's not enough grease in there. If that's the case, you can just crawl under your car to check it out. Sooner the better.

I think if it were PS fluid he'd get more of a jerking feel from the steering wheel... Though if it were low enough, the rack could be messed up.

Well in manual it says that it could be harmful to the power steering.

Ive heard whining, squeaking and grinding from low PS fluid in some cars. *shrugs*.

I have this same problem, it only occurs as the wheel is turned all the way to the right and I drive up a bump of some sort too fast. Like entering a parking lot for a mall or something.

I'm on stock wheels and tires, too.

I think what's happening in our cars is simply that when the wheel is turned all the way, it just barely clears the inside of the wheel well, then if you hit something that cuases the suspension (and wheel) to bounce upward, the tire grinds against some metal inside the wheel well during that "bounce".

I found that slower more careful turns stops this grinding noise.

I don't think the sound is caused by a bad CV or LSD, we would see worse sypmtoms if that were the case. I thinks it's just tire rubbing.

Question Ryoga28, is this sound occuring only as you turn all the way to the right AND going over some sort of bump in the road, or just when you turn all the way to the right?

Yeah, that's the same thing that happens to me. I believe the problem is that the tire is rubbing on the inside of the wheel well when the wheel bounces upward from riding over a large-enough bump while turning hard.

It happened to me several times before I realized what I think it was, and how to stop it from happening. We've just got to drive into bumpy turns more carefully and slowly.

I'm curious, do you think this could be it, or do you think it's something more of a mechanical fault?

I'll find out next friday when I get the klunk fix, endlinks, and new front busings installed. Hopefully he won't charge me too much.

are you running tranny fluid thats not stock? I was running a different brand and my speed didn't take well to it. Sounded like maybe a little electric motor that was lagging or overstressed. Got worse and worse over time and esp after the car was warm. Finally had it swapped back to my mechanics stuff while I had my 30K done, and the noise was gone the day I picked it up. I could be way off base though.

I'm currently using Redline mt-90, but may be switching over to royal purple max gear later on

all of the feedback I was getting from the car was while i was turning 75% to completely cranked. If I gave it a lil gas it got worse. I hated dumping 30 bucks in fresh fluid but it ended up being my problem. Good luck. BTW I was using Amsoil gear oil. Very happy with the motor oil though.
