Has anyone used these gloves to work on their cars before? Are they ok to use when grabbing parts that are hot?

Define "hot". I wouldn't grab your catalytic converters with them, but they should be fine for your muffler or valve cover.

i think i had a old pair of yellow leather ones, and i took my exhaust off with them about 20 min after turning it off, it was still pretty hot though. i would try and get some other thicker gloves though, i dont think there rated for heat or anything.

Might want to get something rated for heat, like an ove-glove. But, seriously, you can try a laboratory safety supply store which would carry gloves for high heat applications. Maybe LSS.com.

Yea the mechanix gloves didnt specify anything about heat resistant, but the guy at lowes said they "should" work. Just looking for anyone with experience with them so I don't waste my money.

I bought a pair a while ago and have used them when touching "hot" items. They do offer some protection but I wouldnt go getting grabby on a freshly hot manifold or exhaust pipe but you definitely dont have to wait for it to be completely cooled off.

I actually need a new pair lol

I LOVE my Mechanix gloves -- I've saved myself from countless battle wounds (scars) since using them. They're basically a high-quality but very thin leather glove (palm and fingers) with a breathable backing. They offer some heat protection but I wouldn't trust them to grab an exhaust manifold just after shutting off the car.

They are fantastic for most other tasks though, even ones requiring moderate finger dexterity (they are soft and you can pick up all but the smallest allen keys with them). They also keep your hands from freezing against cold metal although I can't see that being a huge problem in Kentucky. ;)

Throw 'em in the laundry once in a while with the other car-repair clothes, air-dry, and they're good as new!

+1

After washing them, there was food in the oven and I had on my mechanix gloves. Needless to say, I burned the hell out of my finger. For extreme temps, get something better.

We've held hot lugs inours, after a track session, but that is about as far as we'll go when it involves something hot.
