MazdaSpeed6 1-2 Shift Shock

Hello,
I am new to driving stick, this is my first stick car, I've had it for about a month.

'06 MazdaSpeed6 GT.

I have a problem with the shift-shock between 1-2 (and a little bit between 2-3), no shift shock between 3-4, 4-5, 5-6.

I'm not sure if i'm doing something wrong (changing gears in the wrong way or what not), has anyone else seen this problem, or had this problem?

Also, I had this problem before I did the clutch adjustment, and after I did I still have this problem (even though it got a little bit better, the shift shock is still there)....

Thanks in advance,
-Max

it's because of the soft motor mounts and the short gearing in those gears. Solid motor mounts will reduce the shock but increase vibration at idle.

the only weay to get rid of it is to flatshift out of every gear.

Thanks for the quick response,
Like I said I'm new to driving stick, what does "flatshift" mean?

Flatstick i'm not Familiar with the term. perhaps some info on this would be nice. sorry missed the last post my bad.lol

adjusting the clutch lower helps alot too.

It made my 1-2 alot easier, hence also alot smoother.

There is a very detailed how-to somewhere around here.

Thanks, I already did the clutch adjustment. That very detailed how-to was great, it did make it smoother, but I still have it sometimes, and I want to get rid of it completely.

no-lift-shifts...the WORST thing your gonna do to this car. and i guarantee when you break your trans and the dealership checks out your munched up syncros they'll tell you exactly what you've been doing.

although i do agree it would eliminate that "shift-shock".

So from what I've gathered, no-way around the shift shock without damaging the tranny? (except if i change the motor mounts)

damn people, yall cant drive or what? sure, this car is jerky and the clutch is a pain, but a good driver improvises for the solution, not the dumb way out ('flatshifting')...

flatshifting or powershifting, however you want to call it, is bad for your car. People that tell you this, are the same people we all have to wait HOURS in line to run a stupid 1/4mile because they blew their tranny and now they gotta tow their cars and clean the strip. Happens a lot in the mustang/srt4 community. They also like to shift @ 7K...you know, the more revs the faster!or so they say...(sarcasm)

Solution: Apply a bit of gas when you are about to pull out the clutch (after the gear has engaged) and retrieved slowly...i could explain it more detailed/better but i rather leave it like this...if ya cant figure it out, let me know and i'll add more help

....wow, says the guy with a protege. Drive the car, then come back kid. Meanwhile, if you dont have any good advice nor own a Speed6, just lurk.

sorry if i hit a nerve.

If you shift from 1-2 right after you get the car rolling the shock is greatly reduced. It seems to get worse the higher the RPM's are. If you take off easy and shift below 2000 - 2300 rpm's it should be almost non-existant.....Or you can do what I do, drive it like you want to and tell your passengers to hold on this could bet rough. :D

yeah i hate the clutch. i did the adjustment, it helped. but i agree with shifting at like 2k out of first and maybe second

Try this,

When you are about to shift into 2nd, push in the clutch first before you let off the gas. This should get rid of the shock/thud. Same for 2nd - 3rd.

See if this helps ya.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

Thanks Karma_hunden, I send you a PM asking for some more details...

I noticed that too, when I shift below 2500rpm, the car does it relatively smoothly, but when i shift between 2500-3200rpm, the car get's very jerky... But isn't there some disadvantage to shifting out so early? Short-shifting or something?

Also, when I shift out early, the gap between the car in front of me and my car becomes very great, I never had this problem on my automatic car, becuase I would just press the gas and keep the gap a car's length. But now when I'm trying to shift out early to avoid shift-shock, i create a big gap. But if I shift out at 3200rpm or so, i have shift-shock but a smaller gap. So i'm trying to get the best of both worlds. But it's more important for me to get rid of the jerkiness in the ride.

Isn't that similar to flatlining? Or do you mean, push in the clutch -> push in the gas -> switch gears -> let out the clutch?

Thanks again to all for the help you've given so far.

Actually I find that shifting closer to 3k lessens the shock for me.

I just ease the clutch out a little slower between 1st and 2nd and give it some gas to keep to the RPM's from dropping way off. Nice and Easy. You jsut have to keep the RPMS where the you think 2nd will be at the speed your at. Probably only a few hundred below where you took it out of 1st.
