Mazdaspeed3 vs Golf R32 test

tweeking the ms3 is going to be more difficult then most people think. bolt ons should be ok and a fmic as well, but try to tune it differently and you are going to find there isn't much for an option yet with DISI. mazda and audi are the only ones on that front yet and the technology is still relatively new so there is going to be a learning curve and a bit of a wiat for bigger turbos/manis/boost and the such b/c of the serious amount of fuel pressure and other things that i won't even pretend to know yet.

will it be a true tuner car??? only time will tell... is it a great bargian and a sweet ride... sure seems like it!!

Well hopefully Mazdaspeed will sell upgrade kits with ECU reflashes in the interrim while everyone else disects and learns the coding. Injectors Im sure are going to be expensive for this application as well.

i will have no shame getting beat by the srt-4 if it is faster because I will go home knowing that:
A) My car is not a dodge, and
B) My car is not hideous inside and out

you drive a damn ugly ES. if that helps you sleep at nite by hating, more power to you.

No the MS3 will probably not need much tweaking to keep up with the SRT 4 Caliber.

Curb Weight MS3 3153 lbs (Sport Compact Mag) 263hp 280tq
Curb Weight Caliber SRT-4 3189 lbs (est) 300hp 260tq

Too close to call imo...
It will be interesting to see what kind of numbers the ms3 pulls in first and second gear. Does the technology on the ms3 limit only torque? Sounds like a chip would be a good idea (as long as it doesn't mess with the complex DISI) along with exhaust, upgraded IC, and CAI. The ms3 should have no problem taking out the srt-4...on the drag strip. I'm not even concerned about cornering ability, mazda always does a great job of being ontop of the competition in that field.

Whaaaaa? You're kidding right. It takes a LOT for an MSP to beat an SRT4. The SRT4 can be made to handle as good or almost as good as an MSP for a LOT less than the MSP can be made to be as fast as an SRT4 . Besides look wrong at an FS-DE block and it will detonate on yo behind! The Neon block will hold high boost no prob.

Not hating on hte MSP as I think it looks far nicer, has an interior FAR better and handles LEAGUES beyond the SRT's wildest dreams. But beat in performance? NOT EVEN CLOSE!

To bad its not a dodge engine in the srt4 neon. Its a mistubishi. The new motors in the Dodge caliber are made by Hyndai.....

They still have to get the power to the ground. I'm wondering how much difference it can make to have 300 vs. 267 hp on a FWD platform. Those tires will only deliver so much power before they lose traction. I guess the big difference will be in very high speed roll-ons. There the Caliber will be impressive and put a lot of very expensive cars to shame.

The Caliber looks are so strange. At certain angles I think it's okay, at others it's just awful.

bingo...FWD isnt a awsome platform for oodles of torque or power. Infact Sabb engineers back int he day said that no FWD needed more then 250 whp. Why not from the guys who invented FWD. If course cars are heavier now and you technically can use wider tires but the MSP cant even use 280 lbs of torque int he 1st 3 gears.

Im afraid the SRT-4 will flip..It still looks SUVish to me. I was suprised when I actually saw one in real life. even if the caliber can do 160 mph I wouldnt want to be in it. Comming from a guy who use to drive a 1998 ford explorer ;)

I hear the new EVo is based off the caliber platform which make a EVo essentially a dodge caliber with mitsu badge on it. Still it looks SUVish to me.

Look at the ground clearence...you're not fooling me. Its one of those mini SUV.

Just using past drag racing experience racing in classes... 100 lbs of weight is generally considered the equivelant of about 20 HP. Not very scientific, but thats what the rules were based around in evening out weight/power. It'll be a fun competition with out a doubt. Neither car is going to see it's best performance till after the 1/4 mile is up though. My guess is they'll run similiar times to a stock 99-07 Mustang GT
