I comepletely Disagree....But this is just my opinion, just like your is yours.

Its funny that the Bad boy Compact for mazda is a hatch...Hmmmwhat is Dodge putting out...oh yeah...a SRT4 Caliber...Another hatch...I see a trend..and I like it!

subaru too. its just like europe.

Yah that's a shame. No offense, but hatchbacks are for kids or grandmas. And YES, it IS IN FACT...a Wagon. face it. you dont see lamborghini wagons for a reason.

I agree. it may be fast as s*** through a goose but its a wagon. I'm not saying I dont like wagons cuz I wouldnt mind a P5 but meh I think its too big, just like a family car. A 4 door would still be acceptable but not so much a grocery getter.

I wasn't a big fan of the hatch choice either... (still aren't totally sold) But, in reference to whoever said Lamborghini's don't come in hatches/wagons... you're right. But they dont' come in 4 door sedans either! With your logic, I guess we should only be looking at 2 door, rwd, preferably rear engine, 2 seater coupe. Since that's obviously not practical, we have her a car that defies all of that and offers not only class-leading power and performance potential but also a good amount of versatility as well.

While I still feel they would have been better served going with the sedan (hello?!! the reason the MSP didn't sell well had nothing to do with it's drop dead gorgeous looks and everything to do with it's underpowered powerplant) Since that's clearly not the case with this car, it seems like things have sort of reversed a bit. (power with less looks)

As far as I'm concerned, I'm more interested in what's inside anyway... So, hopefully most share the same sentiment that you guys do and save their money for an Sti or EVO instead. With any luck, these cars will sit for a while giving those of us who are interested, an oppty to get one hell of a deal.

The MS3 is a work of art in my opinion. And I consider this a "hatchback". The term "wagon" is synonymous with wood-grain side panelling that went extinct long ago... except on the occasional PT Cruiser I suppose.

Thanks for the brochure! Looks great! :)

I've thought a lot about this and feel this car is and should be known soley as a 'hatch'. My thinking is... if the car falls into the midsize or higher category, it's a station wagon. Anything less... hatch.

It's a stupid thing to argue about... But most 'hatch' owner I know get sand in their vagina when you say they have a station wagon.

The only notable exception to my logic above is if the car (regardless of its size) is so blatantly proportioned in typical ugly ass station wagon manner. Think that hideous lancer or almost as hideous focus pos. now compare the focus wagon to the 4 door hatch version. BIG difference!!

These pictures just sold me on the RED... work of art is a bit much but it's growing on me. wtf is up with that black strip on the front grille though? that looks horrible man... the msp is sooooo much better looking. now THAT car (orange 03 only) is work of art!

The Mazdaspeed3 will do well in the sport compact market......and theres a hatchback trend goin on right now, nothing u can do about it. Im sure the "Mazdaspeed" brand wont stick to the Mazda3 hatchback....you'll see other sedan/coupe sport compact models in the future.

Heres more of your modern day "wagons" ...

...not saying the Mazdaspeed3 IS NOT a wagon, but people dont refer to the smaller "hatch" style cars as wagons anymore.

Damn why does it say "every family have one" I wouldn't want the MS3 to become the next civic.

All those wagons you posted look like ass... So maybe I need to change my definition to... if it looks like crap, it's a wagon. otherwise, it's a hatch

Haha....yeah, there hidious. Just proving a point.

I will finally give my voice to the sedan vs. wagon debate, i used to love sedans to death. But after having owned a P5 for near 5 years i have fallen in love with some level of practicality. ( I still think minivans and Tahoes are the blight of the roadways.) With that horrid thing that mazda calls a trunk opening in the 3 my life would not be the same as I know it. Having a humongous hatch that swallows tools, furniture and luggage I couldnt have it any other way. Plus visibility is so much nicer with a hatch behind you.

I think that Mazda knows that a large percentage of the population are looking for practical yet fun vehicles. If the world is to move away from Big vehicles car makers have to desight CARS that fill multiple roles. The Europeans have been smart enough to realize this for a while. There are plenty of dedicated performance sedans, the time has come to make performance minded wagons available in america. Its great to have a fast as hell sedan 70% of the time. But 30% of the time one will need a little more versatility: viola the compact hatch. Anyways thats the way i see it. The 3 is not a "dedicated" sports car, there are plenty of those, but it fills a couple pairs of shoes well. Love it or leave it. Trust me the whole station wagon stigma thing gets easier to get over with time. Anyways its not a station wagon its a hatch. LOL.

Half of them are hideous, the other half are sexy in thier own way, Problems are that wagons look kinda sleek. And its they're, moot point.

chico, my lamboghini comment is in a sedan (male car) vs hatchback (female car) way, you dont see female vipers do ya? (there, re-phrased it for ya hehe)

dont get me wrong, the MSP3 is probably one of the prettiest wa..hatchbacks out there but yeah, the image of march simpson, a grandma or a teenager with saggy clothes getting off one is forever engraved in my head. Even the GTI which is a pretty car looks gay from behind with all due respect.

BTW, i gotta agree with that 'every family has one' comment...bad mazda!! bad! if you are targeting a young market dont do that (makes you think/realize its a family wagon)...if you are trying to excentuate uniqueness...then again, dont do that. Mazda should learn from the VW GTI...im yet to see a commercial where that thingy aint hauling ass.

P.S. im not saying Hatchbacks should be extinct, i just dont think they LOOK good specially if the look you are trying to achieve is a racing look. Now if ya wanna fit furniture, then hatchabacks are better (although if ya pact a pair, you'll buy a pickup/suv), just like you can fit big stuff into women :) hehe female cars.

EDIT: WOW that jaguar wagon is hideous!!

so sedans are male and hatches are female huh? LMAO I don't even know where to begin so I'm not even gonna bother....

But I will say THIS! haha The previous (and perhaps even current) jetta is perhaps the girliest car I've seen in a long time... Sure, maybe the fact that 99% of the drivers I see in those cars are women factors in but, in the end, those cars seem rather feminine to me. I can give you a list of TONS of 'sedans' that rub me the same way... (Saturn Ion anyone?) But I think you get the point. Hatches obviously fall into the same category... they can either be feminine or (in case of the MS3) relatively manly.

In the end, it comes down to things like wheel upgrades, ground effects, etc. Base vs Base, the sedan version of the 3 is by far the more feminine looking car (imo) Load either one up with mazdaspeed type upgrades and they'll clearly get a boost of much needed testosterone. Same goes for the aforementioned Jetta... since the vast majority of them I see are basic versions, that's the impression they've made. However, the GLI is a pretty slick ride and certainly comes across as a much more 'manly' car.
