MazdaSpeed Protege
Hi everyone,

I have had my MazdaSpeed Protege since 2003 and I have started getting a problem when I start accelerating. When I accelerate I get a problem around 3500 rpm to 4000 rpm in 3rd and 4th gear where the car really gets sluggish and the Engine cuts power almost to a point where it feels the engine is going to fall out of the car because the jerk is that bad. I have also noticed that when I am on the highway and I put my foot down to overtake another car the exact same thing happens and I immediately have to get my foot off the accelerator. When the car is idling sometimes will stall and the rpm jumps around a lot when I am at a set of lights.

Can anyone please help me with this problem.

u in pickering ontario?

nice to know someone having msp for 9 years oO

did you change anything yet, or everything stock?

honestly bro I have no idea! but nahh the only thing I have replaced is the Deck... I put a the AVIC-D3 from Pioneer in it. That is it. To answer your question yes I live in Pickering Ontario lol

Your not the first person to tell me about the engine mounts sooo my question to u is how much to the mounts go for???

if u want a AWR full set 4pieces of engine mount it would cost around 400 i believe

not sure if you would get cheaper deal if you go to mazda scarborough dealer and ask them for original mazda engine mount.

i order a billet aluminum engine mount for 450+ shipping from usa, roughly 550 with customs and brokerage etc.

for 9years , no matter if you abuse the car or not, the mounts must be in very bad shape.

I have driven the crap out of it. You seem like you know a lot about this matter so I am going to ask you to explain to me how the bad engine mounts would lead to the terrible cutting of power... lol

i am really just someone who just start learning about cars XD

if you want to learn something about bad engine mount (youtube it)

basicly engine mount insert gets wore either by time/aging or by aggressive driving so the engine moves front and back all the time when you accelerate / decelerate.

its like when you are running, and someone throw rocks at you, you wont be too happy. so the engine feel your pain XD

this video shows how ur engine moves when you are driving with a bad engine mount

if the link works oO

I say start off with replacing front and rear engine mounts. With awr ones. From there change sparkplugs, check to make sure ur coils are fine and get a kandn drop in filter.

your engine mounts are not causing this....are they bad? I don't know but that is not your problem with cutting out....there are several things that could be going on here, 1) spark plugs, could be bad or just not gapped right .028-.030 2) wires and or coils 3) fuel cut 4) vacuum leak 5) MAF sensor going bad.......I had this problem with my MSP but mine is not stock, My problem was a combination between MAF, spark plug gaps and vacuum leak....I have also heard about the stock map in the ECU going haywire or just not holding up and causeing fuel cut....does this happen only when you start into boost?

This only happens when you start into boost. Even idling its rough and sometimes almost stalls. I changed the spark plugs about a week ago. The jerk is really bad though.

check for vac leaks, clean your MAF, check the gap on your plugs, you may even want to try seafoaming the car

i have the same problem changed the spark plugs, mounts and when i try to acelerate the car just jerk back and forth bad starts @ around 3500rmps can't go past 4500 either i let go of the aceleration pedal or i shift to the next gear and the rmps drops an goes up like it wants to pick up but it cant... doesn't stall though for me it does it in every gear.... :(

Yeah def close the gap on your plugs some. Also, Do you have a boost gauge? Does your speed feel faster than normal lately? The feeling of your car hitting a serious wall during acceleration is typically from spark cut out. Your air meter(maf) could be maxing out causing this issue. Search fuel cut here on the forums and you'll learn a lot more.
