MazdaSpeed paint quality

I hear numerous complaints about the paint quality on all proteges (very thin paint and easily chips off and scratches).

My question is the following, is Mazda going to give the MSP a better and thicker paintjob or is it going to be the same quality and chip very easily? I'll be very upset if my new Spicy Orange MSP has a few chips in the first week of ownership.

to be honest, the 2000 honda civic I traded for the mp3 had worse paint, at least so far. It seemed much thinner, chipped easier, scratched easier, swirlies everywhere easier etc. Same goes for the windshield.

When i was at the dealership with my dad he asked a question about the pain, and the salesman had good things to say about it, that it was real glossy and had a lot of coats on it. I dont think we should have to worry about the paint.

That's strange, Everyone in the P5 forums here and at PClub complain about the thin paint. I just hope that it is like my Prelude's paint. For almost 9 year old paint it has held up VERY well.

I think Honda's have decent paint jobs even though they are not high-end cars.

Sorry, but your vintage Lude isn't representative of the new gen. of Honda (and other cars). I have a 2000 Accord EX V6, and its paint is a lot thinner than my family's 88 Civic and Integra.

This is also the same complaint that I'm hearing about the Nissan cars (Sentras and Maximas).

There needs to be a grassroots uprising against this recent practice!!:wtf:

YUp, I've had 8 honda's, and the paint on them isn't what they used to be. I had a 94 lude as well.....loved that car, and the paint was a lot better on that then the damn 2000 civic I had. My father has a 1999 Accord V6 coupe, and the paint on his spoiler/skirts/mirrors etc started to fade only after 2 years, and it's really bad now. And he takes pretty good care of his car. Honda isn't the same quality is used to be in some area's.

Nice Lude Mark94! I've had a 90, 94, and 97 lude. Damn good cars.

I think everyone complains about new model Japanese cars. And the salesman praised the P5 paint job too... thats what they get paid for, I don't think their word on the MSP should be worth a crap...

I remember hearing about car manufactures switching from oil based paint to water based paint because of environmental regulations or something (cost cutting)???

Don't quote me on any of that, but something has changed in the type of automotive paint being used.

I have this feeling that as cars become more advanced, powerful and reliable...the quality of parts and materials is actually going down to cut costs.

Don't Toyota's have good paint?

That's funny. I can show you Toyota trucks and cars up here that are less then one year old, and already have rust spots on them. And these are cars that are taken care of. I have a toyota salesman in the family, and he has sold quite a few toyota's to friends and family over the years ( at least until I convinced them to buy Honda's when I was driving a honda....and now Mazda) Over the last 20 years, I've seen more and more toyota's up here rusted like crazy. I don't know what it is, but it's common knowledge up here that if you buy a toyota( specially a truck)....it WILL rust. i guess they don't like snow

One thing I'm concerned with after looking at those close up pics of the orange on the msp. What if your in an accident? How much trouble is it going to be to match that kind of paint with a clear coat like that?

*shudders*

ugh man, i dont even want to think about that. if i ever get into an accident with this car, im not proud to say it, but there will probably be some death occuring, if not from the inital impact.

anyways...:D

I'll confirm that Toyota paint is nothing to write home about either. My fiance has a 2000 Celica and the front is a covered with rock chips after two years and the areas where there are thin scratches, rust is starting to break through.

Oh well, with all these new environmental policies I guess I'll have to be very careful not to tail gate anyone on the roads.

Newf, your right, Preludes are great cars!

I drive a 2k1 Civic and i can testify that the paint is paper thin, i scratched it with my cell phone clip. Not to mention the panels all dent easy, thats why i'm getting rid of it as soon as i get enough cash to get either a MP3/MSP!!

Hey I work at Toyota (Corolla and Matrix) and your right we use a waterborn paint but paint has come a long way. Manufactures are putting less and less paint on their cars bacause of new advancements in aplication. Guess they sould re-think the situation eh?

Newf- do you think that living by the ocean has anything to do with the rust problem?? (salt water) I know serveral "newfies" that say this is so

As most people have said, Mazda paint leaves much to be desired. I've got quite a buffet of stone chips on the front end of my '01. But if you think the paint is bad on the newer Mazda's, take a look at some of the early 90's models. My old RX7 ('91) had paint that would flake off the same way a shell peels off a hard boiled egg. I had to have the entire car repainted because there were huge sections of bare sheet metal...lol. My girlfriend's 92 MX3 GS has the same crappy paint that flakes off. Hopefully several years down the line our Proteges' paint will stay attached. I mean...stone chips are expected, but entire sections of paint flaking off is rediculous.

Oh yeah....if you look in the owners manual for our Protege's they have a section that says what speed the paint will start to chip at! It's something in the 50MPH range at a certain distance. I mean, who really takes the time to measure....all I know is if you ride behind dump trucks spraying up gravel, your paint is history regardless of what brand car you are driving.

On a brighter note...the Mazdaspeed Protege (Orange) probably has an overall higher quality paint since it's a new color that is not offered on any other Mazdas.
