Mazdaspeed LSD Revisited

Right, the G5M was used in 90-91 Proteges, upon which the 1991-2003 Escort chassis are based. But from 92-95 the G25M was used, which are identical in specs. There were no more G boxes used until the latest 2.0 (2001+), which is a G15M.

Either way, it should be adaptable by a transmission shop, with the LSD unit and the bolt kit(s).

Wait a minute, isn't the Mazdaspeed a clutch type lsd, not viscous? Oh, and I retract my statement about the viscous lsd, the only good thing about them is they should last a while...

they don't really have any touching parts that wear out quickly...But once the viscous snot loses its shearing properties you essentially are stuck with an open diff until the box is removed and cracked open again...So for the street FWDs they are not really better for life...and in most cases these are more readily used on RWD becuase the diff is much easier to access among other things...

Also I prefer torsen LSDs anyway...Torsen refers to Torque Sensing, in which they internally bias torque from the source...Viscous setups do not bias torque until one wheel is already spinning (the shearing action of one diff pack spinning faster than another causes the goo to thicken)...Which is good for tractability initially, but you will break a tire loose at first...Then the fluid thickens and both wheels get the torque...

this seems to be already mentioned but both the Quaife and Conical ring Mazdaspeed LSD are torsen variety

The Quaife is the unit that requires the bolt kit and the slight machining. . .the Mazdaspeed unit requires no modification (at least in the G15 tranny).

If he truly has the G5M-R , like he says, it will need the bolt kit to be machined slightly by a transmission shop, as was done to BobbyCoffin's KL-ZE 323, however, I suspect he has the G15M-R

What.... Are there some dealers out there that won't sell you the LSD? Or is it just based on the installation??

To my knowledge any dealership that sells MSPs should at least have access to it...they may or may not install the diff, which is usually based on the amount of time it takes to do the work...But the LSD is a low priority part in that it is not something that is replaced often...so they will most likely need to order it...and prices will vary from dealer to dealer so call around...All you need is the part numbers...The computer will bring up the price and they should give it to you...When I ordered the MSP #3 engine mount, the computer didn't even tell the service manager what it was...It only listed a price and that it was not a replacement part for the P5...Same may apply with the LSD...If they ask what type of car you have first, they will then probably say this is not the replacement diff for the non MSP protege...and may even state that it will not fit your car (which is what happened with that engine mount to me...claimed it wouldn't fit, and it fit perfectly fine)...

Anyway most dealerships should be able to get you one without a problem...If you do get hassled, try www.mazdastuff.com and find their phone number...They should locate one for you...

last i heard, there was only 5 msp LSD left in USA.. Any Mazdaspeed dealer should be able to locate one for you.

where did you hear that?

Andy wagner was calling around last week to try and find one for a customers car. he called me and asked for my dealers # to try and locate one.. This is what he told me. I would think mazda just stocks them for warrenty purposes.

edit: mine took 3 weeks to get.

you can still get them.. it just might be tough to find.. my dealer had a hard time finding mine too..

Why don't you guys just call Mazdaformance.com, they got me mine in a week. It was like 20% cheaper than the dealer.

does anyone have the correct parts numbers for this yet i am about to order mine also just need the part numbers thanks
