PSKA says "this is a lame ass forum" but you on it dogg so you must be a lame right. I hate when people come on a forum that is dedicated to something and they talk s*** on it. I'm gonna hold back on what I really would say if I talked to dude in person.

Maybe he's just mad because most of you are >28 and a bunch of ricers.

you mean <28 and a bunch of ricers?

Besides...I'm almost 23, and not a ricer. Note my status under my name...That' might have something to do with why so... :D

yes spec v is not meant for turbo/super charging. If not engine failure, tranny failure is almost certain. Spec vs have a very weak tranny. Also to my understanding, the mechanics of the QR25DE is acutally made for all out n/a. The engine has a wide power band and maximizes the torque and hp but, the redline is low (6200rpm i think). The piston speeds are much faster in this engine than another. For example, an SR20 doing 8000rpm would be equivalent to the QR25 doing 6900rpm. Because of this, the QR25DE's high piston speed makes it difficult for the engine to breathe (starves itself of air).

Spec v's also light the tires up probably because the tires are alot crappier than the potenza's we have stock.
The MSP is a great car for under 20k.
Looks great, great rims, great stock audio(beats most stock systems), turbo'd with decent tunability.
The neon is hands down fast though. And the motor is actually very strong. Forged rods, with cast pistons, that will hold nice boost, but the new models are going for alot more than sticker. Theres a blue one with a sunroof here thats got a 5000 market adjustment. 27,300 for a neon.
You can get a brand new MSP for 17k.
:D

You can get SRT-4's for $500 under sticker here, so the gouging isn't universal. I priced them when I bought my MSP, but passed.

The Spec V doesn't have crap tires, they're actually terrific tires. Continental ContiSport Contacts. The Focus SVT also has that tire stock. VERY sticky in the turns.

The Spec V roasts its tires because it has a lot of tourque (claimed at 180 lb/ft at the crank) - most of the torque is available right off idle through 5k RPM's- very flexible motor. On top of that, the gearing is quite short. All those things combined mean you'll have some tire roasting going on.

That motor has a very long stroke, but that's actually not the culprit for the low redline- its the use of some lightweight valve springs. A little beefing up and that motor will reliably rev to 7K or more- and probably will in stock form in the near future as the sport compact wars continue to heat up.

Back to Saturn Ion Red Lines: check out this month's Car & Driver. They have a quick review of the car. They liked the power, but can you say understeer? Lots of it. Other car mags will have more to say on the Red Lines as the release date gets closer.

My opinion: go with the MSP. The power is ok stock, you can turn up the boost if you really want more. And the handling is superb! Interior is nice, excellent audio, great style from the outside, and 27mpg. What more do you want? Low price? Ok, the dealer in Austin, Texas is pushing them off the lot for $16k for an 03, $16.5k for an 03.5. You might be able to get close to that in your town.

Ok, I'm biased. I admit it. Bought mine last January and haven't looked back! Won street tire class in autox on the oem tires, and also won my class everywhere else I've autox'ed the car. What can I say? I LOVE MY MAZDASPEED!!!

I've heard a few things about the Spec Vs, engine recalls, and oil issues. But maybe that's just for 2002s ;)

The oil consumption on Spec V's was an early production issue. They had sourced rings from a different manufacturer than the Japanese spec engines and they weren't as good, so they consumed a lot of oil. Once they figured it out, they switched to the Japanese spec rings for all and the oil problem was fixed.

The transmission in that car is plenty strong. Its from the Maxima, which puts down some good power.

The gearbox is not real slick, though. Its clunky and can get crunchy. Most folks stick synthetic gear oil in there, which helps some, but doesn't always cure the crunch.

There was a recall on the Spec V - they leaned out the mix because they were running too rich and burning up the pre-cat, which caused material from the pre-cat to suck back up into the engine and ruin it.

Each car has its own problems, but the Spec V is a performance bargain.

.. I have to go with everyone else on pretty much everything. ESPECIALLY the whole thing of, "If you're only concerned with straight-line speed, the MSP isn't the car for you." KEEP THAT IN MIND! .. If you have a lot of long, straight roads where you live and you want to do nothing but blast down them, do NOT get the MSP. The MSP was made more for handling, not for straight-line races. It can hold it's own in straight-line races, sure -- it can even kick some serious ass with a few mods -- but when you're looking at a stock MSP versus some other cars in the same price range, it is simply not the fastest. But it is the most well-balanced. THAT is your difference. THAT is where you must make your choice. Do you want straight-line speed, or do you want balance?

However, I have to admit that seeing a Saturn -- Redline or not, I don't give a s*** -- compared to a MSP (and the SRT-4 and V-Spec) was a bit insulting. I've always viewed Saturns as some type of mechanical rat. They just don't even compare, in my eyes, and they never will.
