Mazdaspeed 3 CAI ?

My dealer parts guy said he would have a few MS3 CAI in next week. I am considering buying one, but don't want it if it is too loud. How much louder than stock is it anyway...anyone know?

The last thing you'll be worried about is sound. If anything, the SRI is louder. I'll have comments soon once I get my dashhawk and install my CAI.

Mine just shipped. Have UPS tracking number. Should have it on by next weekend. I verified it is the updated one.

You are aware that the dealer has to install it to retain the warranty and that hydrolock isn't covered? Total cost for this will be around $500.00 once you factor in installation cost.

interesting. i installed mine and have had no problems with my warranty. I have even had to have a smoking turbo replaced and not a single question on it.

and here is what it on mazdas site about that
Replacement parts or accessories installed improperly by dealers, Importer/Distributor other than Mazda.

it doesn't say it has to be installed my mazda. It only says that if the installation is done improperly then the warranty is gone.

Water shields and water repellant covers have nothing to do with hydrolock since none of them are going to impact that at all.

In order to hydrolock a motor, you'll have to submerge the entire inlet - not just part of it, the entire thing - of the intake pipe so that suction from the motor can draw water through the intake. If you've driven through enough water to completely submerge the inlet, you're going to have more problems than hydrolock and no "water repellant coating" or curved piece of metal is going to do one bit of good.

They may make a filter that is subjected to occasional splash moisture last longer, though.

The weight of the water column will prevent it from being drawn into the motor unless there is a complete seal. You can experiment with a straw to test that.

As my daily driver I do not want to suffer from a constant drone on my 21 mile one way daily commute which I have heard some CAI make.

Trust me, I just went haulin around in a 08 MS3 with Injen CAI and Forge BPV and it was smooth sailing. The MSCAI should be no different.

Right about hydrolock, wrong about the installation. Please feel free to read my thread!

I appreciate the thoughts in this thread as to why Mazda puts the air straightener at a 45 degree angle in its new CAI. It makes sense. I just got the Mazdaspeed CAI from SU today and will install tomorrow.

What confuses me is why does AEM continue to align the air straightener with the MAF sensor?

The Mazdaspeed straightener even has a very visible mark for easy alignment at the specified 45 degree angle. The mark points up, in line with the MAF sensor, so that the vanes on the straightener end up at the 45 degree angle.

Why is AEM still going with vertical MAF alignment, and is one method better than the other, given that they are the same part otherwise?
BTW: I spent the few extra bucks over the AEM just so I could have the cool Mazdaspeed decal under the hood. They should produce the same power gains. Warranty is not an issue because I'm already at the catless DP/RP stage.

From what I understand, AEM has one less bend in their intake. Don't quote me on that though..

Called my dealer late last week (in Calgary, AB) and they still show it being discontinued. Hopefully Mazda Canada gets moving and releases it up here again. I want one so bad.

Since I don't have an AEM to set beside the new Mazdaspeed CAI for comparison, all I can go by is the downloaded AEM instructions with diagrams and drawings and the same ones for the Mazdaspeed part, and of course, my observation of the Mazdaspeed part. From what I can see they are identical in shape, angles of bend, everything.

I'm quoting you but not "quoting" you in the sense that we just don't really know and we admit that. But they sure look the same.

I've now installed the second gen Mazdaspeed CAI and air straightener. I put the straightener in at the specified 45 degree angle. I don't know if it makes a difference.

I am surprised that it is as quiet as it is. I have a K&N CAI on my Nissan Armada and that thing is LOUD. I ended up putting about $100 worth of Dynamat on the heat shield and under the hood above the heat shield to quieten that sucker down a bit. But with the Mazdaspeed CAI, I can hardly hear any difference. Just a little modest "whoosh" that I really have to listen for. Nice.

How is the performance of the MS3 CAI?

The Blue Warranty accessory have to be installed by the dealer.
I think you are mis-informed on this one parker. here is the quote directly from mazdas lawyers...

Called yesterday and they are now available in Canada!!! $475 [CAN] plus install. (Hopefully will do the install myself.)

EDIT: Never mind... Called two others to confirm, they both say it's still 'Discontinued.' I called Mazda Canada directly, apparently it's still discontinued in their system and the US system says it's 'Under Review' or something.

I asked if I could bring a Mazdaspeed CAI up from the states and they told me it would be treated as a 3rd party product. I'm so p***ed. (bang)

Once again, only on BLUE accessories will your accessory warranty be gone if the dealership didn't install it. And when I say warranty, I mean the warranty on the accessory, not on the car.

MSCAI is a green accessory and there is no obligation for you to have it installed by the dealership. You still maintain full parts warranty of the MSCAI if it were to have defective parts in the box.

I gotta say this, I finally started unwrapping all the parts and they're a bit scratched up from the factory. Oh well..

thats not the way i read it according to your post.
Should the parts be purchased but not installed by a MAZDASPEED Dealer, they will be covered for the first 12 months/12,000 miles from the date of purchase

exactly. you do not need the dealer to install it.
