Mazda's Oil Monitor Question

TSB 01-019/15: Engine Oil Flexible Maintenance Does Not Work 2014-2016 Mazda Vehicles

Bulletin No: 01-019/15 said:
DESCRIPTION

Some customer using "Flexible" setting for Oil Change in the maintenance monitor may notice that the oil change due notification will not work because of improper control logic of the PCM. This TSB is applicable for the following cases.
The oil change due notification does not come on, even after mileage exceeded 10,000 miles.
Oil life in the center display is still less than 40% even though the mileage exceeded 7,000 miles.

To display "Flexible" setting and "Oil life" on the center screen, select the "Applications" screen, "Maintenance", then "Oil Change" tab. For complete details, refer to the "MAINTENANCE MONITOR OPERATION PROCEDURE" in the Workshop Manual.

Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure.

When I bought my CX5 in 2017 Sept, I was made to sign a paper saying that I would follow "flexible oil change and service" as shown on the dash or my 10 year guarantee would not apply. The oil change interval is one year or 20000 km which ever comes first.

Is that an extended warranty, or does Sweden get a far better factory warranty?

Europe is more conscious to maximize the oil life and reduce the oil waste on automobiles. Europe started flexible oil change schedule many years ago, some may even force you to use it as evidenced by raj55's statement from Sweden. They also have much longer oil change schedule than us for the same reason. The oil life monitor on my 2000 BMW 528i has the maximum of 17,500 miles on flexible oil change schedule!

Its based on mileage, distance travelled and oil condition. The latter is based on a comparison of viscosity just after the oil is changed and as it degrades. For that reason the oil data on newer models must be reset after changing otherwise erroneous warnings can be received. I*m not sure if these bulletins are allowed these days so mods remove if not. Anyone else, get it downloaded quick!

Yes, Anchorman is one of the best contributors to this board by providing us so many valuable documents and his personal experience! (cool)

This if my first Mazda product. My last 4 vechicles were Acura/Hondas. Turning off the oil life monitor wasn't an option. You would get a warning when the OLM would get to 15% which was around 7500 miles for me. When I got the CX5, I though the the 5000 mile oil change was a bit excessive. I enabled the OLM as soon as a found the setting. Fixed mileage oil change intervals is so 20th century.

The 2nd generation maxes at 7500 miles even if set to flexible, so it seems the same as setting a fixed interval of 7500 unless you some how drive extremely enough that the algorithm decides you need to do it sooner.

Yes Mazda does have shorter OCI which would add the cost of maintenance. Many Mazda dealers use 5,000-mile fixed OCI to their customers. Toyota now goes 10,000 miles with fixed OCI and Toyota dealers are doing the same following Toyota's 10,000-mile OCI guideline.

Agreed!
