mazda6 2005 headunit removal

remove all the center console covers (will have to remove shift knob)
remove glove box
unbolt 10mm bolt from side of radio through glove box opening
remove screws HVAC controls where ashtray was... pull radio out

want anything pics or any walk through, SEARCH!

I too am trying to remove the center console on my 2005 Mazda6. I'm following the directions over here. I got the 3 screws that are holding the console in removed (the 2 below and 1 in the glove box). I can't seem to get the console out though. I've exerted quite a bit of force but the bottom of the front panel just bends forward. I'm afraid that if I bend it any further it will break. Am I missing something or is it supposed to bend forward really far. If so, i've given it all my strength and the damn thing won't come off.

I should gently "pop" out. If you're pulling and it's not moving, then you've missed something. Check to make sure you've actually got the correct screws removed the bottom ones can be misleading (there are two others right there that are unrelated).

You should be able to pull from the bottom and have it physically move forward a little (it has a rubbery seal feel). Then you'll have to grab the sides near the top and pull. It should just "pop" out from there. Make sure you cover your shift nob with a towell to prevent scratching/damaging the console.

DO NOT forget this step:

unbolt 10mm bolt from side of radio through glove box opening

If you miss that one, the radio will not come out.

Thanks everyone. There were actually 5 screws that needed to be removed. I had the 2 lower ones and the one on the side of the radio but there were 2 more hidden behind the temperature control knobs. I pulled the knobs off, removed those 2 screws and the thing pulled right off. I read online that those screws weren't added until the 2006 models but I most definitely have a 2005...unless the dealership told me the wrong year and put the wrong instruction manual in the car.

EDIT: I just checked the VIN and it is definitely a 2005.

Any advice on trying to get the shifter console piece out with an automatic gear shift? If feels like its connected right below the headunit, but I don't see what I need to press in. Help?

I too have an automatic. After I got the cupholder out the plastic piece around the gear shifter almost fell off. If yours doesn't I would wiggle it a bit and see if you can get it out that way. It doesn't have any screws holding it on. It should just snap off. One thing you do need to do though, make sure that you have your parking brake on and put the car in neutral. I had to move it between neutral and reverse in able to slide the plastic piece all of the way over the gear shift rod.

Thanks for the advice on this. I'll try it out the next few days.
