Guide: Mazda5 PJCan 4.1 Canbus

PJCan is a custom canbus adapter that fills a void for about $50. You must use it with an Android based radio. It works with other Mazdas but you'll need to check.

Has MAC address for connectivity (via Bluetooth) to config.

If you buy an Android radio WITHOUT canbus, you’ll get a basic version of the main harness (bottom). You’ll need to find your own cable which has the 20pin canbus connector AND 8pin Android C connector (top). Not knowing what I needed at the time, I bought a harness with the most connections (15/20) I can find and it came with an additional harness for newer gen Mazdas, which I cannot use and ended up having to de-pin.

Wiring diagram (confirmed with the developer) for the current release. Note that connections have been updated and I suspect this may change as it continues to evolve. Not an issue if you don't update it. You need 9/20 (really only 8/20!) connections, rest are not used or blank.
WARNING: if you have a canbus and swapping in this one, you NEED to check the wiring to ensure either 1) you disconnect ACC or 2) open the pjcan and remove the internal jumper, otherwise, the unit stays powered when the car/radio is turned off!!

Based on my understanding, it seems they took the Raise canbus board and enhance it b/c the guide calls for selecting Raise in your Android settings. If yours came with something different, you'll need to go into Factory Settings to change it.

Access via Chrome browser (via Bluetooth) on any device, does not need data connection.

4 UART protocols avail - needs work.

There's no need to program steering wheel buttons since canbus automatically recognizes the resistance of each button, buttons work as OEM. It also offers advance controls where you can remap the buttons or add double, triple tap the same bottom to execute a different command (limited to what it is avail). You can also re-pin the ST-SW wire to the OEM harness should you prefer to use Android radio's button mapping but this has a slight response delay.

No more blank panel in the middle!
Can display radio/volume/climate/ a lot more info, on the middle panel (anyone still listen to the radio??)

I prefer the display to cycle between FUEL for 5s (Realtime) and RWAY for 2s (Rest of the way, Russian way of saying Distance to Empty :D). If you don't want to show anything, you can enter a line of text, which is also boot-up text. I have the OG line: "Mazda 5"

Some issues:
-There are definite gaps and can be improved but it is very stable and a nice to have gadget
-I question some of the calculated values, which are only in metric (I’m thankful it has English menu).
-Mz3 videos show the clock can be replaced with real-time MPG value but that option is not working for me. If you press your fingers into the display panel (clock section), you’ll see OEM has the label in there! Mazda is cheap in giving us an interface to display/control it, much like how the TPMS system has individual tire air pressure and air temp but Mazda doesn’t want to pay for a screen and software to display/control it so we get a dummy light…
-When audio source is BT or local media, it does not display file's ID3 tag (song title, artist, etc), it shows Disc#(?don't recall) and Track#(?something like that).
-Not an issue but more of a pipedream but I was hoping it can support full ODB2 port interface, like with an ELM327 adapter that and allows Torque app like features (created custom PIDs).

So far, the Android unit has been pretty awesome (fast, stable, sounds GREAT). It does have some minor nuisances but I can live with it.
