It is an interesting comment, I've owned 1 Honda so far, OK car but not really the "wow reliable" effect everybody talks about. I've also owned a share of Fords, and is not as bad as the opinion says (dunno)

Actually Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln are all in the top ten brands according to JD Power, while Mazda is next to last in I believe the 33rd position.

At least we beat someone (VW maybe)

I would never have bought a car from a maker in the bottom 10% of quality ratings if the particular model that I was purchasing wasn't rated much higher than the rest of the make. The 5 is actually rated pretty high, and in the consumer reports-type verdicts where they just choose one car in each segment, the 5 always wins. They always put it in the minivan segment, so it's pretty easy to win for performance, but the 5 has to beat the Odyssey and Chrysler minivan to win the segment. That's pretty good.

Yeah, the Mazda5 is rated high by Consumer Reports, but JD Powers doesn't rate it too highly.

In general, I ignore JD Powers. It rarely jives with my "reality".

Ok guys, are you ready??

Hmm

Down to one car for the wife and I. We have two kids, and I bike to work.

Present:
2009 Mazda 5 Sport MT Galaxy Gray (bone stock, well, we have a protective cover over the rear seats when they fold down, and a cargo cover, oh and Yak racks now)

Past:
2001 Honda Civic (needed something with more space, example M5, see present)
1996 Honda Civic (good car, till it found the rear end of another car)
1978 VW "Bus" (way too tricky, donated it!)
1999 VW GTI VR6 (had for 2 weeks and gave back to the dealer with defects)
1997 Toyota Tacoma (miss this one dearly, we decided to go to one car, see present)
1987 Nissan Sentra (OK)
1986 Mazda 323 (could not kill this one)
1972 BMW 2002tii (fun, when it ran)
1966 Plymouth Valiant 100 (AKA The Sloth)

Having had two Civics, one 96 and an 01, the 96 drivetrain just felt more solid, got 180K easily until we killed it in an accident. the 01 was not bad but we got the occasional check engine light for the v-tec and the tranny was not quite as solid and crisp. YMMV

I want the cargo cover, but man that thing is punitively expensive. Is there a cheap internet site for Mazda accessories?
