Mazda5 Brake Upgrades

so, thinking about a brake job on our Mazda5...

doing my research on upgrades i found out that the front and rear calipers are the same on the 5 as they are on the speed3. bonus. however, the front rotors are a different size. (bigger on the speed3) another bonus for the 5- the rear brakes are BIGGER on the 5 than on the speed3.

so, it would be possible to upgrade the front brakes to speed3 fare by swapping the caliper bracket, rotors, and pads. but i cannot find the mounting brackets for the front speed3 calipers anywhere. all i can find are the calipers - no brackets :(

thoughts?

@beldecca:

You're willing to spend 2000$ on brakes only... ?

Go with Brembo disc (plain) and EBC pads, and it will brake like hell, believe me.

Or if you just use your 5 for DD buy aftermarket slotted or cross drilled ones w/ ceramic pads. Difference with oem is night and day.

(encourage slotted / cross drilled do nothng for a daily driver.

I'm looking for new brakes too and don't want to make a new thread. Where do you guys recommend looking for some new rotors? Not slotted or cross-drilled, but an upgrade to OEM. Tried tirerack and they have ONE set that's not a high-performance/track option.

I like EBC Green Stuff pads. Ran them on a Focus a while back. Great bite, good wear, and low dust. For rotors just go with whatever you can find locally. Rotors are rediculously heavy and you will pay a premium to get them shipped.

Wanted to re-address this thread. I see it's been dead awhile. I am looking for an front brake upgrade. I just had some Conti's put on about a month ago. They're great in town and going to down 2 or 3 exits on the highway. We've taken 2 trips though and the same damned thing is happening at higher speeds. Hit the brakes and start to get the vibration.

About 2.5 years ago I had the same thing going (vibration in front when I brake). It just got progressively worse. Mazda did a resurface on rotors and it went away. I remember seeing a thread here a few months back about the front OEM rotors being basically s***. It advised that simply anything other than OEM would solve it. There was probably something about the pads too.

This is a day-to-day car. I just want a good, stock/semi-stock replacement setup. Any up-to-date suggestions for both Rotor and pads?

I sound like a broken record, but have you sanded the pad residue off your rotors? If not, sand them if you have vibration. That will get rid of it without decreasing braking performance, which resurfacing does over time.

If you insist on buying new ones, Centric makes a very, very good quality replacement at a very reasonable price. I bought a pair for my Focus and they were awesome. They paint the inside vent area so that it doesn't rust. Read up on them. They will be about $150.
