never trust the Dutch. J/k.

Metric HP is also different than SAE HP. If it is a Dutch mag that is probably why.

that being said, the next svt should have about 225 horsepower as already stated by Ford. Same engine and chasis as the new 3, so, logically, we should be looking at the same numbers for the Mazdaspeed 3 when it comes out, 2005 probably.

In the Autoweek review of the Mazda 3, they state that Mazda is planning a three-door (I presume hatchback), a convertible, a wagon, a Mazdaspeed, and an AWD version of the 3. They didn't state what markets would get what, but it's safe to assume that being as the current Mazdaspeed Protege puts out 170bhp, that a Mazda 3 with the 2.3L already putting out 160bhp could put out 200bhp in a Mazdaspeed version...

It will be relatively easy for Mazda to squeak out another 30-40hp out of the 2.3L engine in the Mazda3.

And for those people who dont buy the MazdaSpeed version of the mazda3, we will be more than happy to provide you with the parts necessary to get the 40+ more HP you are looking for. ;)

I thought I heard ~175 hp here in the US...

The Mazda6 is only rated a little more. It would be foolish to sell your lower model car for less but give it more power. Also, $16k... nice.

No word on the MazdaSpeed 3...

do you guys know how strong the auto transmission is towards taking a turbo or supercharger would be. I know how to drive stick but i commute to san francisco and it is alot easier driving a auto than stick in all that traffic. I know stick are easier to mod but i would like to see how far I can go with an auto stick. Thanks big D

well if some of the auto p5s here are any indication (they use the focus trans for automatic) they may be more fragile than the stick counterparts. just ask deckedoutmp5

i imagine that ford/mazda might hold the transmission design over to the next model.

subaru gave tons of power to the impreza. the legacy (the larger and higher scale model) has no 227 horsepower option, nor does it now have the 300 hp option. people still buy the legacy. i say build a kickass small car so that people will be able to afford it. then your sales of the larger vehicles will follow suit.
