Mazda3 top speed

I'll probably never get past the limiter but it'll just be nice to know it's not there.

To date, I've only just barely topped 100. I don't make a habit of driving recklessly.

Goldwing,
If you actually get FMC to make you a comp w/o governor, make sure you let me know, I want in on the buy (shocked). I'd Also like better flow characteristics (god I hate that word) if it's not already at optimum levels.

Okay okay already....

Nobody is going to blow up there car and turn it into a twisted stinking heap of metal by trying to drive 133 mph. Is this a smart thing to do on public roads with granny driving that 38mph Lincoln on the Interstate? No.

Your 3 and mine will still be big shiny bug splatter if we hit one of those tanks.

OTOH, my 3 easily gets to 110 on those aforementioned empty desert highways. It is more stable at triple digits than most things I have driven and that are on the road today.

118 is relatively slow, and I really don't know where you all learned to drive, but you never jerk your steering wheel no matter how fast or slow you drive.

Basic driving skills are needed no matter what you drive. The 3 can get you into trouble because it has higher limits, so things happen faster when they go wrong.

Today's recommended reading: On High Performance Driving by Bob Bondurant..

there will be a quiz.

The truth is:

More accidents are caused by drivers running out of talent than a car running out of safety margins.

1.) have you autocrossed your car ye to fully know it's limits?
2.) If a car doing 130 on a public highway with vehicles dragging ass below speed limit and decides to cut you off something needs do be done fast unless you want to explain how you rearended a car at 130 mph by modifyng your vechile specs in court.

*edit* I agree with the last line of your post...but you can't control the actions of the fucktard ahead of you is what I'm trying to get at...I had my car 3 days before almost going offroad cause someone in front of me decided to go in reverse in the freeway. then at 1k on odo I was replacing tires cause a soccermom on her goddame cellphone in the far left lane almost missed her exit. 130 is not reccomended on highways in any vehicle!!!

autobahn...

People do it all the time. The problem is that any monkey can get his licence and get on the highway in any vehicle in any condition. There are lots of things that could help fix it though. First is to make a licence harder to get. Then require retesting. Also charging for the licence would help keep some riff-raff off the road. Finally if the cops enforced the "slower traffic keep right" mentality, then faster drivers would not have to swerve out of the way. All of this is opinion of course, but I am pretty opinionated...

BTW I hate suv's...

autobhan and the wemen are the ony reason I'd go there....I'm shooting for just outside of tokyo....tobad they won't let me ship my 6 there...I'd come back with a JDM Fully modded and seriously boosed 20B (nana) and navi godammit!

GW if they raise tle limiter will thay also change the powerband past 65K cause it's no fun when you can rev to 72 but can't use it!

Apologize to you all in advance...but the question was asked.

For those wanting a short answer, skip everything below the next line...

I have autocrossed my 3 a total of 6 times.
I have a real good idea of what the limits are.

The 3 (okay my Lava Orange Station Wagon) is not really an AutoX car, but it can embarrass a lot of faster and more expensive cars, properly driven. Sometimes I drive decent, sometimes I drive crappy, on a crappy day, I will (on index) beat 80% of the people that show up.

The car has high limits, and it is reasonably benign....hard to eff up driving the car because understeer happens progressively, and you can tell you are driving stupid by the howling of the tires.

My regular AutoX car is a SM2 Turbo Miata, so guess which one I'd rather drive? Been autocrossing cars since 1981. Beyond that I roadraced a SSB Honda CRX Si for 6 years, a Mazda Rx3 ITA car for another 7 years, and a Spec RX7 for a season.

I've hotlapped a GT3 car, a Porsche 911, a Ferrari 308GTB4, numerous Corvette's, a Lotus Turbo Esprit...visited my relatives in Wolfratshausen Germany, so been on the Autobahn, and no, I did not get to drive the Nurburgring, but promise to do so on the next visit. So yup, I have had more than my share of high speed seat time over the years.

I've raced on every track in Arizona, and most of the tracks in Southern Cali, some are unfortunately closed anymore.

What I am suggesting is based on experience. The best investment anyone can make is in themselves.

The best money I have spent over the years is going to Driving schools at Bondurants in Phoenix, also spent some money with Skip Barber and Track Guyz. One thing they teach you over and over is that Speed doesn't kill, it's the sudden stop. Smoothness trumps testosterone, and you don't know what the limit is until you've spun it a couple of times.

The lack of fundamental driving skills among american (US and Canadian) drivers is an embarrassment for all of us. The 3 is a decent car, bad driving will get you nice and dead, even if you are driving a garbage truck.

I do not advocate speeding on public roadways because even if you DO know what you are doing, you can't read the mind of those around you.

Like I said, one evil granny in a big black Lincoln can do you, me and the rest of you all in a heartbeat, no matter how skilled/good or safe a car you have.

That's my driving resume, and yours?

I agree 100%. I have had some training (not as impressive as yours, but apparently you are at least 12 years my elder) and some autocross experience, and that is the first thing I heard every time. Finesse is best... And no, you can not predict what the old lady in the Lincoln is going to do. My point was that maybe the old lady in the Lincoln shouldn't be there in the first place. Remember that "driving is a privilege, not a right" thing... I know we are all "Americans" and all of the freedoms and what not, but if you are a road hazard, then maybe you shouldn't be driving (you hypothetically, not you personally, I am attacking nobody in particular). I just think that the driver training should be more intense (maybe even include autocross style training) and more selective, and that retesting should test more than your ability to stamp an envelope.

I do not think that we should all start driving 100+ mph everywhere we go. My point was simply that the act of going this fast is not what is going to cause an accident. It will diminish the time that you have to react, however... The car (at least most modern cars) are fine at higher speeds.

BadAzLava3, I think that we agree and we are just saying the same thing in different ways...

Oh yeah, I don't know of a way to get rid of the limiter except by replacing or supplementing the ECU. But since I am unaware of what is even available for the 3, I can't help you... Sorry about the thread jack...

lol...can we just provide our input about the question at hand and not get into pointless posts about driving speeds (if you've got a problem with a Mazda3 driver wanting to go faster than paltry 118 mph...then you should have more fun on vette, porsche and viper boards).

If you're going to be a "forum mommy" take it somewhere else...carry on ;)

not intended to be a pissing contest;) What I am getting at is everyon doesn't have your track record and assume they saw it on TV s it can't be that hard. I'm not worried about you but as you point out the lil person who is reaching up to grab the steeringwheel of their lincoln townboat! And for my situaton the godame soccer moms who fill the highways with their H2's and denalis wit 25 inch chrome rims weaving in and out of traffic no signal on a cellphone! who support anti agressive driving!*pauses to gasp for air*

also the 16 yr old who just bought his vehicle and now has this newly found power to do 130 street racing on a 2 lane windy road stock goodyears...

No offense taken....
Didn't mean to hijack the thread either
So forum Mom can stay away...

I think we all agree that big speed on the street is not a good thing.
We can't ever control what other people do, even though sometimes we might think we want to.

On a positive note, the 3 is a good safe platform and more likely to survive gross silliness with side air curtains, side air bags and a Volvo designed safety cage than any Mustang/Camaro/Corvette at similar or greater speeds.

There are lots of ways for all of us to get our speed fix, but please do it safely, on the track, it's cheap, safe and will help you learn to avoid accidents instead of being victimized by them.

Most insurance policies cover driver instruction, how and where you choose to be instructed is up to you.

My Tacoma pickup has got a speed limiter that kicks in at 112mph.
The dealership clipped a sensor wire for me several years ago.

Then again, even that has Hellwig swaybars, Bilstein shocks, and V rated Yokohama tires. Makes no sense to spend $20k on a car or truck and buy $25 low performance tires.

Best money you can spend is on the tires, every single time. Honest.

Unlike you I went for the 6i base with a few bells and wistles no abs no side impact curtains and no traction control avalable yet. As you stated earlier you don't know the vehicles limits till you loose control of it.

I dont want to be a Fast/Furious street racer. But this speed limit hurt me a bit and i know for many car we can reprogram the ecu and have more performance and top speed.
