Mazda2 Won't start

Mazda 2
Wonder if anyone can shed any light on my Mazda2, haven't driven it for a few days over Christmas and today wouldn't start. The engine turns over with a very electrical whirring which I guess is normal 'cranking'? But it doesn't get any further and won't catch. There are lights on the dash, including a circle with an exclamation mark next to it (looks a little like a steering wheel) - is this power steering? Will ring Mazda tomorrow but wondered if anyone had any ideas if the power steering is knackered would it really stop the car from starting?

Any ideas/advice gratefully accepted! Happy New Year!

That light is the power steering light. It's possible but I doubt the power steering could cause the car to not start. I would start by checking and making sure the fuel pump and fuel pump fuse are good.

The fact that you said you let the car sit for a few days without driving it makes me suspect you have a dead/dying battery. I've seen cars do weird things, like turn on random warning lights on the dash, when the battery still has some power (but not enough). Try getting a jumpstart and see if the car wants to start.

Thanks for the replies - car started the next day, needed a little time to turn itself over but no problems at all it seems?!? Very strange but glad nothing too bad, I suspect your battery suggestions may be correct but couldn't quite believe it could be as our 1997 Golf starts every day, no problem!

Many thanks!
