Mazda Protege Transmission

I have an '02 Protege and still love it. Recently I have noticed, and I may just not have been paying attention before, that occasionally it is a little tight getting it into 1st gear. It doesn't always do it, and usually if I go into 2nd and then into first it's fine, but I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts? None of the other gears do I have this issue. Am I missing something obvious?

yeah, thats actually a pretty common gripe. i bet reverse is tough too eh? its still not as bad as my brother in laws 04 elantra, reverse feels like its in, you let off the clutch and EEEEEERRRRRRRRPPPPPPPPPP

I grinded 1st, 2nd, 5th and reverse gears about a month and a half ago for about 2 weeks and then did the transmission oil change (2 quarts of Penzzoil SynchroMesh trans. liquid for GM vehicles + 1 quart of Lucas Oil Stabilizer) Stopped grinding 1st, 2nd and 5th, but reverse still grinds, but not unless I put it in 1st and then to reverse right away. I think my synchro's are shot.

if you're having problems getting into reverse...pump the clutch pedal 2-3 times and try again.

ive always found mine tight and stiff to get into 1st and 2nd, and sumtimes it pops out of 3rd gear... anyone else find it weird that you have to be completely stoped to put it into reverse even with the clutch pressed in.. otherwise you will grind.. my other cars were not like this.

if synchros are bad, this doesnt help, and it doesnt help in my situation. I have to put it in 1st and Then put it into reverse and it doesnt grind.

Reverse isn't syncroed on these cars, if that explains anything for anyone.

My tranny.. is kinda screwed ever since I drove it for 4 hours with no gear oil in it :'( I hear a whine through my shift knob in 3rd and 5th, sometimes the 1-2 shift is really hard, sometimes it pops out of 3rd, etc.

:( The bolt that fell out of my tranny (causing me to lose the gear oil) was holding some internal rods in the transmission in place, so now they are sorta loose in there.

do u have to add the oil stabilizer , what does it do .

Lucal Oil Stabilizer is thicker than the trans. oil, which helps few things, like misteriously minimizes/removes the grinding of the gears, IF your gear synchro's are still in somewhat good condition.

It's pretty much like a bandaid, but it helps quite a bit. Shifting is actually a bit better with it.

Damn. My car does the same thing. Whines in 3rd and 4th. Sounds like straigh cut gears but its not.

I peeked inside my transmission through the fill plug and drain plugs with an LED flashlight any all the gears inside looked mint. The transmission got remarkeably better after I trashed the Royal Purple Synchromax for a temporary Mobil1 75w90. Now she has Royal Purple Max Gear 75w90, I'll see how that does.
