Complaint # CO39445 Ernest Gonzales

Central Texas Office:

This letter is in response to the complaint filed with the Better Business Bureau, dated Jan. 15, 2002, with regard to the audio system in the 2001 Mazda MP3, (my vin # ) belonging to Mr. Gonzales.

First, let me state that it is never our intention to have anyone less than completly satisfied with his or her Mazda ownership experience. I apologize for any inconvenience the audio system model level has caused Mr. Gonzales and understand how frustrating these things can be.

Mazda North American Operations has reviewed this file. It has been determined that no promissory information about the vehicle indicated that this customer would recieve any other audio unit than the one installed in the vehicle. As a customer, Mr. Gonzales certainly had the option to exercise his right not to purchase this vehicle if he was at all dissatisfied with the audio system in the vehicle. Mazda likewise choose to upgrade the vehicles it sells during the production of any model. As there is no indication that the system in this vehicle is defective, has been recalled or is in need of repair, Mazda must respectfully decline the request by Mr. Gonzales to upgrade all of the units in the MP3'z having a Z919 system.

Thank you for contacting Mazda. I appreciate the time you took to bring this to our attention and allowing me the oppurtunity to respond to your concerns. If you have any further questions, please contact me directly at (800) 222-5500 x 1149

Man whats up with this how were we supposed the know that they would be upgrading the cars during the production stage and how could we exercise our right to buy the car if we werent at the plant seeing these cars come out???? what the $^^& is up with that???

I can understand wanting the z828, but there's not much you can do. it's not like you never seen the car before you bought it. You knew what radio you were getting before you signed it. And I don't know about you, but i knew before the cars even hit the road that there was going to be 2 different radios all along. Just found it on the internet.

Mazda's web site said the MP3 had the Z919, so they only way you could argue is if you had the 818 and wanted the 919.

I have the 919.

Get over it...

geez, what about all those that bought the Z06 only to find out that the next iteration would have more power? JIP!

I have to agree that Mazda really has no obligation to change all sold cars to confine to the specs with their current production number unless it were related to a recall or malfunctioning part(s). I would never had known about the detachable Z828, because I saw the Z919 listed on Mazda's website. In fact, I was sort of dissappointed with having the Z828 until I found out the difference between the two. I definitely prefer the detachable cuz I do remove it ALL the time (based from past experience with owning a car that was broken in to).

It's a raw deal, I admit. But then again, I too, will probably scream about the raw deal I got with this MP3 if and when Mazda pumps out a turbo or high power new engine version of the Protege next year ... especially if the price tag will be very similar to our MP3s.

Couldn't wait for a new car or I'd had waited for the Mini-Cooper S. :D

when i bought my mp3 there was 1 blue and 2 yellow ones....the cars were in the show room.....they saw me with my dad so they asked me which one i want to test drive..i said blue.....I never even looked inside the yellow i new i wanted the blue one...I had no idea about the different stereo until a buddy at school let me look inside his yellow mp3 to discover that difference......i do believe they should of gone with the same unit in all 1500.....i never recall hearing or seeing in all the car magazines i read that they had another setreo besides the z919........but like they say it is buyer beware........

828 doesn't have cute dolphins. :).... Just kiddin, I know its frustrating, The 828 isnt THAT much better.... do like dude said. They have to replace it if yours malfunctions, and they dont have any 919s

Wow, I can't believe you went to the BBB with that issue though. I bet Mazda was thinking..."WTF?" I guess the only thing you can hopefor is that someone breaks into your ride and steals the 919. Then you can use the insurance money to buy a better/different deck. I knew about the deck difference before I bought my MP3 and I also wanted a yellow one, so it worked out for me.
