i can't believe you people why do you need mazda to turbo charge their cars you can do it yourself and the same applies to in-car tech. you are just paying for the badge otherwise.

Because
1) Warranty
2) Emissions Compliance
3) Resale value

B segment class leading right now as of 2015 Models already introduced is nearing the 140 mark(Mini Hyundai and Kia) That would be a 40% boost in power from the current model (2014) and way above our (mazda247) speculated HP for the 2015 model.
Let's just hope it stays the same weight as the current model AND gets this speculated boost in power.
So by class leaders they mean base models? Not a Fiesta ST or a Mini Cooper S.
Pretty much leaves the mazda 2 and mirageYes. but the "New base Mini" is now a turbo 3 cylinder. And the big block in the Kia/Hyundai is a shared unit. The Fiesta is up there in power, but like the Kia/Hyundai, a little hefty. And the Yaris is just downright ugly IMO.

Apples to apples, Yes you can. BUT...it's a big but. ST is .7mm lower than the M2, so you lower it using a relatively conservative spring ($290 or less for HR) and better struts ($400 or less for the CS units), Has stiffer rear beam and larger front sway bar ($385 for the RB set), has 17" wheels, but can run 15" so that's a wash, Dynotronics proposed FI kit even conservatively at 50whp put the MZ2 @ 150 at the crank with a 2280lb weight. ST is @197 HP dragging around 2550 plus. I think it's a dead heat.At minimum, there's no way you could 'build' a 2 with even the same acceleration performance as a Fiesta ST for anywhere near as cheap as the ST.
Mazda's a clever, engineering-driven company. I don't know if I'd expect a 140HP engine, but there are other ways for the total package to lap the autocross course or track as fast as an ST. They had to polish the base fiesta from a somewhat lethargic turd into a very shiny pocket rocket. The 2 already has the fundamentals down.
140hp stock would be a great place to start though!

Here's the big BUT ; the FiST is $21,000 ish (cheapest I've seen them for a base stripper model), the M2 is $13,000 (yes you can get them for that) plus $5,000 for everything else including labor.
This is basing the performance on speculation on the Dynotronics kit...it could go up...
Well.. they need to hurry up; there is an AWD, turbo charged mirage now.. http://www.caradvice.com.au/310491/mitsubishi-r5-mirage-ready-take-on-wrc-2-in-2015/
Oh, certainly, I'm not saying that I'd *hate* a 140hp Mazda2.140hp stock would be a great place to start though!

Well yea but, that stuff trickles down to the average joe. most of it is OTS parts..
WRC went through another massive reorganization in 2013. It remains to be seen if this will make the competition cars relevant to road cars again. It doesn't really trickle down anymore: those cars aren't mistsubishis, fords, etc. anymore than a NASCAR vehicle is a ford, chevy, etc. The parts are off the very expensive shelf of spec custom-built DCT's and AWD systems.
