Mazda 626 Intake Mani Info thread

I've been having install issues.

Got the SU mani, it was their 1st prototype, and they tested it inhouse on their turboed P5

The mani has now been nicely ported and lightly polished (by me Josh and Harley).
I plan on scoring the runners and repainting it before attempting another install.

So got the stock mani off but had to torch the stock EGR pipe to remove it.
I put a gasket on the head to see if there was much gap / overlap that could be ported and there does not seen to be much if any. I used the gasket as my guide for porting the runners. So they should match up well.

Now the good parts...

Got to do the AWR rear mount while mani was off! Hooray! Holy VIBRATIONS, my whole car shakes!!
Did TB coolant bypass :)
Got the Samco hoses on.

Then the trouble...

1. My Fuel rail mounting tabs were nowhere near the 626 mani's.
According to Jason at Montgomery Mazda:
Before 7/03 production part # FS7E 13150A $90
rear mounting tab/bracket should say "FS7E"
After 7/03 part# FP49 13150C - upgraded fuel rail.

2. Injectors appear significantly "recessed" when in place in the 626 mani, on the stock mani they appear to be flush.
3. EGR tube supplied with SU mani was not lined up to OBX header OR 626 Mani outlet...ARGH!!! Copper tube temporarily in place.
4. Once in place WITH an NSN mani SPACER and 2 gaskets, stock studs and hardware appear to be too short. Some thread can catch but not enough for me. One shorter bolt stripped some thread out of one of the spots.
5. Rear support brace on back of 626 mani is about 2 or 3 inches further from the stock mounting point. This is only lining up on 1 of the 2 bolt holes and requires a longer bolt.
6. Some vaccuum sources will need to find new homes. (more outlets on stocker)
7. What parts of the VICS/VCTS solenoids need to remain intact and attached? Does anyone have any experiences re-mounting them anywhere?

After a whole days effort
SU/626 mani removed and stocker replaced

Oh, and the MPI NA module was returned for replacement so I have my ECU on the floor with wires all over...

Haven't given up yet!

Lookin to source an earlier fuel rail and figure out the EGR pipe placement and the recessed injector ports

if you need an fuel rail from earlier, let me know
i can go to the local junk yard that has 1000's of mazdas

Just keep the electrical connections to the solenoids plugged in, to keep your ECU happy. Vacuum hoses and such can be removed.

here is someones cardomain with their 626 mani
I'm suprised theres that big of a difference. so does this mean for sure that the SU mani is a 626?

looks like your fuel rail holes are supposed to be spread out more from the middle based on theirs

ur pic looks like the 2 inside brackets on the stock fuel rail would line up.
Notice in my pic that the mounts are like 90 deg out of phase?

both su's and protege garage are the same manifold..

this two manifold are designed by mazda, and sold by them at a higher dealer price.

paying su 600 for the same thing you can find for 300 is plain stupid....

i'm hoping to have mine installed this weekend and hopefuly clear the answer as to why is 2000+ manifolds a better deal....

Any updates on this??

I wanted to suggest for those trying to fit the 626 to there engine that they just use a corregated gas stove line mensioned in "corregated EGR tube" thread. http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123662673

I did this on my P5 when I was port and polishing my intake manifold and it makes it a lot easier to take on and off the IM, plus it would solve your problem of the stock EGR tube not being able to reach the new 626 IM. I have been using it for several months now and there have been no problems with it at all.
