You can program extra transponder keys through the OBD2 port using the free ForScan program on a Windows laptop, an OBD2-to-USB cable supporting ELM-327, and a key blank bought off Amazon or EBay for $10-15.
Can also be done with an Android tablet and a Bluetooth OBD2 adapter, I believe, but I haven't tried this.
FYI I have no relationship with Forscan or any of the products or services listed. I'm just a guy whose had numerous Ford vehicles that use the PATS system and figured out how to use Forscan to program chip keys to work in the ignition.
I don't know exactly which Mazda years and models this approach applies to, but it should work for all Mazda 2, 3, 5, 6, etc. vehicles that use the same PATS system as Ford.
In my case, a tenant has a 2013 Mazda 2, and a requirement for her to park in the driveway is to have an extra "valet key" in our front closet, so we can move her car if needed and she's not available to move it. So, I looked into it, went for it, and it worked. $50 of key blanks and licenses to get two fully working keys has to beat whatever the dealer or locksmiths are charging.
I covered it all in more detail here.
I had a hard time finding out if the 2013 Mazda 2 used PATS and if this approach would work. I decide to take a flyer and IT WORKED!!
I found this about what Mazda vehicles use PATS and this approach may work with:
"The PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key system is used in all Mazda vehicles starting from the 2003 Mazda6, 2004 Mazda3, RX-8, 2006 Mazda5, and MX-5, as well as all other models introduced after 2006. Additionally, it applies to specific earlier models like the 1998-2002 626, 2001-2006 MPV, and 2001-2005 Miata."

Hi Guys, Got a solution that will help many Mazda owners. I have had a number of Ford vehicles, from 02 Focus Wagon to 06 Ford Fusion. These vehicles use the PATS system for keys and security. Well, Ford and Mazda have been sharing parts and platforms for a while. Example, a 2006 Mazda 6 has the same engine and trans as the 2006 Ford Fusion. As best as I know, anyway.
So, with many Mazda cars that use Ford technology, you can program Mazda keys using the free ForScan program that interacts with the OBD and PATS system through the OBD2 port.
I successfully programmed some new keys for...

- Functionality: PATS prevents unauthorized access to the vehicle by requiring a coded key.
- Key Programming: New keys must be programmed to the vehicle's PATS system for them to work.
- Diagnostic Access: Accessing the PATS system for key programming often requires specialized diagnostic tools.
