Making The Switch To Mobil Synthetic

Well for the first year I stuck with using the factory oil. Now that it's time for the first oil change in the second year I'll be using Mobil Synthetic 5w30 from now on. I hope to see better gas mileage and less rough idling. Did anyone notice improvements when they switched over to Mobil 1?

5w40??? or is it 5w30...
I'm currently using 10w30 synthetic blend..but i will be change it to full synthetic.

I doubt you'll notice anything except better oil and engine longevity. I changed to Mobil 1 at 1000 miles (first change). I now have 6000 on it and it's time for the second change this weekend.

Is it ok if I use 5w30 for summer weather and winter weather?

EDIT:

BTW Jack Daniels how did you make out with the hurricane?

In NY I'd go with the 5w-30 year round. It's better for cold weather startups.

The hurricane was not too bad for me personally. We really didn't get much rain and the wind also wasn't too bad. My house and my business both never lost power or had any real problems. My yard is full of leaves and small debris, but that's about it. Lucky.

The usual areas are flooded, Old Town Alexandria and the tidal area in DC.

There are a lot of problems locally, however, widespread power outages, the entire area is having drinking water problems and we're supposed to boil it before using. I didn't find out about that until after I drank a big glass, made oatmeal and coffee. My water pressure was low at my house this morning. But, all in all, I think we got off pretty easy. It could have been a lot worse.

I'm at work right now but the phone isn't ringing and most everybody has the day off. Schools are closed too. I'll probably close up early if it's like this all day. I expect we'll be back to normal by Monday.

I changed to syn at 4700mi. I've been keeping MPG records since the first tank and the numbers say, no difference.

4700 miles on Dino Oil - 29.7MPG

2800 miles on Mobil1 - 29.6MPG

so how long when you have full synth can you go without hurting the engine? ie, idealy 3000 miles? or is it diff with synth

A lot of folkes still go 3000 miles. I tend to go longer. 5000 miles is typical for me using Mobil 1. I've gone longer, but I try not to make it a habit. BTW, my old S10 Blazer had 160,000 mile on the original engine using dino oil changed at 5000 miles average and it was still going strong when I sold it. On that car, I actually forgot and went 12,000 between one of the changes.

I used 5w30 mobil one in my last car and just swapped this one over after the break in period of 2000 miles. I like the full sythetic because when you drain it it is still the same viscosity as when you poured it it in. Versus regular oil comes out looking straight up black and runs out like water. My 01' ES I changed the oil every 5000 miles with 5w30 and I lived in Alaska and it ran like a champ. No it is not to late even at 60,000 miles to change your oil out.

Some newbie questions...the break in period is 2000 miles? What guidelines should I follow?

Also, would it be a good idea to wait until then to switch over to synthetic? And what filter do you guys (and ladies) recommend?

BTW, I'm new here and should pick up my 2003 Protege5 this coming week. Just test drove it today, and loved it. Not as much punch as my `01 Focus, but it handles awesome. Power will come later....

Thanks!

Welcome to the boards mcstark. I just bought 4 quarts of Royal Purple Motor oil from Racingbeat.com, so i'll be making the switch at 17,000 Miles. IMO it's never too late to switch to full synthetic. I've been using a Synthetic blend, but those really dont' do anything.

I don't believe in waiting to switch to synthetic. I've switched to Mobil 1 on the first change, usually inside of 1000 miles on my P5, my Z28 which I sold :( and my Regal GS.

Do they really recommend changing it within 1000 miles? Seems kinda short to me. Be I plan on having this car for a while, so it couldn't hurt.

What about filters? I usually use Fram, but haven't heard great things about them.

from what i've read about Fram filters, they used to be top quality, but really suck these days. Oil filters is more of a preference. I use Puralator oil filters, but alot of people use Mazda, or any other brand.

What a coincidence, I remember you from LS1.com. I bought a Protege too.....kept my Z28 though. Just couldn't part with it.
