Making The Switch To Mobil Synthetic

Alt & JD - Thanks for the advice! Very happy to have joined the boards...drove home from the store tonight and thinking about picking my Protege up this week. I can't wait...just can't believe I'm going to own such a nice driver's car. My Focus is nice, but it doesn't make you want to drive it...the P5 just talked to me after the test drive. I think she has all of 27 miles on her -- I put on 11 or 12 during the test drive.

Thanks again!

What a coincidence, I remember you from LS1.com. I bought a Protege too.....kept my Z28 though. Just couldn't part with it.

I didn't want to sell my Z28, but it just made sense at the time. I put it on Autotrader for what I thought was a pretty high price thinking if it sells for that much I'll let it go, if not, I'll keep it. Well, it sold within two weeks. I paid $23k for it, drove it for five years and sold it for $14k. Not too shabby.

I'm going to hand over the P5 to my daughter when she starts driving next year and probably buy myself a Lightning. I'd like to have a pickup again and that's a nice combination of performance and utility.

As I understand it, switching to full synth too soon is not good as it does not let the car break in so well (its too good). I did my first oil change at 1500 km, to reg oil. Then at 8000km I went to Mobil 1.

During the break in its actually good to have a little bit of wear as it "finishes" all the machined parts. Same as when you are breaking it it is sometimes good to occasionally redline the car as it will help seat things further.

Don't ask em to defend this stuff, just regurgitating what a couple of my car buff friends have told me. I trust their opinions as there has been more than enough eveidence fo rme that they know what they are talking about. You guys can take it for what its worth...

Thanks

Yep, I've heard that too, but there are some new cars that come with Mobil 1 from the factory, such as the Corvette. In my mind, that blows the theory.

Lucky daughter. Pick-ups are great, and you'll never realize how many friends you have. ;)

According to the P5's owner's manual, Mazda recommends oil changes every 5000 miles not 3000 reguardless of oil type. Why waste the money on additional changes? Also, has anyone ran synthetic in a car that was burning oil.? My '92 Accord (150K) is starting to use a little and it is staying in the family so I was thing or switching, but did not know what might happen because of the burn (.5 qrt a month).

I would guess it would burn more using synthetic. On an engine that old, I'd probably stick with dino oil, maybe even go up in viscosity. How many miles do you get on that .5 quarts you add every month?

Mazda Service Dept.

Ok it wasn't that bad, I had to pay just 18 bucks for the service and Mazda filter.

However I noticed that they only used 3 1/2 quarts of oil. I thought the car is suppose to have 4 quarts?

I was broke last month so i went w/ the synthetic blend..and noticed the car fel a little slower on the acceleration.... i regularly do mobil 1 full synthetic...So anywayz..i just did my oil change and used the full synthetic...and the car feels perkier..not to mention..i can make a nice chirp shiftn into 2nd gear!

I recently switched to Mobil 1 as well, with about 64k on the odo. I am doing 3k changes, instead of the recommended 5k. Not that much money difference, and worth it for the extra protection. I tend toward conservative maintenance. Not driving, though :D

I am doing all my own changes also. I have heard some bad things about Fram, I suggest sticking with Mazda filters.

Is anyone running a synthetic filer? I know Mobile reccomends changing to a synthetic filter... just wondering.

Cheers,
Scott

I got my oil changed today at 1500 miles and the Mazda dealership in West Covina used 5W20. Weird. I'm getting a free oil change at 3000 miles, so should I have 5W30 or 10W30 put in there? What I should really do is bring my own oil there.

the entire area is having drinking water problems and we're supposed to boil it before using. I didn't find out about that until after I drank a big glass, made oatmeal and coffee.

Unless you're into cold oatmeal, i'm guessing that and the coffee would have been alright ;)

Yeah, I thought about that. They were saying full rolling boil for 1 or 2 minutes though. It's all over now and everything's back to normal.

Well, as long as you made it through without the runs that's all that counts (2thumbs)

Hey, how come we don't have a smiley on the can? We seem to have everything else :)

i switched it on my second change... my first change was free from dealer.. then i swited to synthetic, along w/ the tranny oil..., what a diff... smoother and somehow faster response..

oh and i recommand changing your tranny to synthetic too.. since my mech couldnt tell what kinda oil they put into the trany... suppose tranny fluid stinks like a b****...
