Maintenence Schedule

[ This thread is aimed at what is a warranty requirement, NOT what folks are doing, or 'think' is good practice etc ]

So I get a call from Tyrone Sq mazda yesterday, girl in the office trying to peddle an oil change, saying it was time for my "50K" maintenence.
I pointed out I had, indeed, had the sched 45K work done there, live far away, have oil changes done locally, and that the oil change interval is 7500 miles.
she says its 5000, so I ask if my warranty has been voided for incorrect maintenence.

This gets me connected to the service manager (bow)

He says Florida constitutes severe driving conditions, so they use the severe maint sched.
He continued to dodge the question about the warranty, and could not produce any printed guideline from Mazda NA

Think I will call Mazda corparate today and get this clarified

Any one else have a similar issue ???

The Oil-Schedule is in the manual. I can't think of a condition that wouldn't qualify your car for the "severe" schedule. But either way, they can't void your warranty for following at least one of the maintenance schedules as they can't determine your driving habits or commute. Just typical Dealer BS with them trying to sell you a service. The dealer I got mine from wanted me in every 3K miles, so I have never gone back there since. Just stick to the maintenance schedule in the manual and your ass is covered, no need to change the oil any sooner.

Wow...

Yeah time for a different dealer if you can find one. A state does NOT constitute severe driving conditions - your driving habits do. Just keep all receipts regarding your past oil changes and related maintenance.

The rep at mazda corparate said essentially the same thing, with the exception of the different dealer part.

though still kinda vaguey about the need for 7500 vs 5000 it does come down to drive habits, stop n go , high altitude, dusty etc

I've been driving in FL since '95 and I've never followed the severe condition schedule in an Owner's Manual and have been fine. Just my $.02.

I have been changing the oil every 3k since new. With the engine in these cars being well known for fuel dilution in the oil, and shearing down the viscosity level fairly quickly I would think 7500 is pushing it a bit long.

changing the oil every 3k is cheap, and will likely keep the engine much cleaner in the long haul.

Very subjective. IMO, any of these would qualify under the 5K schedule:
  • Majority stop & go driving where the car almost never sees 4th, 5th or 6th gear.
  • Excessive dust, smoke, or other elements that can soil the air/cabin filters quickly (i.e. frequent travel on dirt roads)
  • Frequent, short trips less than 2 miles (car never gets fully warm/lubricated)

7500 miles. Why go that long anyways? We dont drive BMW's or Porches. You know this car has bad fuel dilution which is poopoo. I know even without including driving habits, Vegas is severe just cuz of our heat and all the dust alone. Switch to the 5k oil changes atleast. I do mine @ 3k. It cant hurt, but going too long can
