Hi all, Very odd question. I'm looking to get mags (Wheels) in 16". I have the original 15" Mags that came with the car should have gotten the 16" option. Stupid me.....But my question is this. If I buy new ones I want to get the same color as the Spirit Green on the car. Will I have to have them Painted? Do I just buy any wheels and have a body shop paint them? Should I get a black base for this? Also can the center cap by changed with the mazda one? Thanks any input would be great....I really like this one I found.

Hi Noah,

Rather than painting, take a look at powdercoating. It is more resistant to chipping than paint.

The wheels will probably need to be sandblasted and than coated and baked.

There are powdercoating forums with lots of wheel pics done by various PC'ers out there. Look at Columbia Powdercoating for example.

Thanks for the info....:)

ya i was lookin into this cuz i couldnt find any decent ALL BLACK light weight rims, but the power coating was gonna cost me like 225$ a wheel, so i said forget that s***.... and ended up finding an 11lb 16x7....

^^It shouldn't be $225 a wheel, holy crap. I think I've been quoted $75/wheel before.

Sometimes if you have a few things powdercoated they'll give you a deal. I had a ton of stuff for my miata coated candy purple (2 step) and it was $500. That included 4 13" wheels, a rollbar and a few misc other small pieces.

Shop around, look at some samples. Especially ask if they think they have a color that would match your Spirit Green. I've seen a few candy apple greens but you never know if they will be lighter or darker...

If prepped properly paint will last as long as paint.

If you're painting never so a black base it will throw your color off. For a pearl you want silver base, for a nice vibrant color you'll want to use white.

I recommend powder coating, shouldn't cost more than $300 usd for the set.

Well I got a quote back from the guys who did the repairs to the car when it had the accident. They said to do the wheels it would cost 185-200 a wheel. Ouch....Really going to have to shop around.

That's way too much. Should be at the most $125 a wheel. That's what i got quoted to paint 18's for my Mini S. But now I'm going with powder coating instead for $300 for all 4. So shop around.

You have pics of it Surly?

Hi Noah,

What lights do you have in the center of the grill in your avatar?

Thanks,
John

P.S. $75 a wheel sounds about right for PC. You might be able to find a small shop/beginner who will do for less. Stripping the wheels yourself might also help. There are a couple places just south of the border if you are interested. Metallic coatings generally need to be clearcoated to keep from fading.

Grassroots Motorsports (my fave rag) is doing a rally-cross Mazda 2. They just installed a set of miata wheels which the painted with the plastidip paint. 15 bucks and done. Do not like it? 15 more bucks. There are other similar paints out there. Why not try to do it yourself before spending 400 bucks?

Also powder-coating is a BAD idea for Aluminum Heat Treated alloys. Read up on Temper temperatures and oven temps for the process.
