Machining Wheels -Offset-

Can you machine the hub face of a wheel down from a +40mm to a +45mm? Is it safe? (ugh)

I think you can only decrease offset by machining not increase it. As the offset increase the wheel comes more outwards so it only makes sense that machining will only allow the wheel to go more inwards into the car therefore negative offset. I'm not too sure though.

^^^ You have it backwards. The higher the offset number, the more tucked the wheel is.

It's possible, it really depends on how much metal is there. You'd have to ask the machine shop if it's doable.

Yea, that's what I was afraid of. I don't want to order one wheel, take it to the shop and see about machining it only to find out it won't work. I guess I could always return it though. I'm sick of looking for wheels and I've found one that matches what I want but the highest offset they come in is +40mm.

what are the other dimensions of the wheel? if its a 7" width, you can get away with it as is, or take off 2 or 3 mm to be extra safe. for the most part you can take 2-3mm off of any wheel and be totally safe.

a lot of it depends on tire size also

well I want to run a 215/45/17, stock MSP tire. 225's are a pipe dream once I put the GC's on.

the wheel is 17x7"

there's a good chance you'll rub with a 215 45... I installed PDHAudio83's GC coilovers, actually they were my old ones, and he has 215,40 17"s on a 7" wheel with a +40 offset, and he doesn't rub at all. I set him up pretty damned low, but no rubing at all...

I'd still have 2mm taken off of them to be safe. but yeah 225's are a pipe dream at that offset, not to mention 225's on a 7" wheel would kill your handling. the sidewalls aren't designed to have strength when angled that much.

did you mean a 215/45 wouldn't rub or that the extra sidewall height will make a difference? hopefully the wheels can be machined down atleast 2mm, sounds like it should be fine.

on the 225 topic... yes I completely forgot sqeezing a 225 on a 7"wide wheel makes the tire meet the road on a bulge, whereas a 215 sits relatively level/parallel

thanks for the help!

np bud... the extra 5% of sidewall may cause an issue, but I couldnt tell you because I have no experience with it.

however I can tell you about what I do have experience with, which is my +45 offset 215 35 18's on a 7.5" wheel not rubbing when I was slammed on GC's, and Pat's no rubbing 215 40 17s with +40 offset and a 7" wheel.

also, by my calculations, you should have 1mm more clearance than I have, but also dont forget that tire brands vary wildly even if they are rated the same size... so be careful.

worse comes to worse you just order some 205 45 17's to compensate for any possible rubbing.

Yea I need to figure out if I'm going to keep the potenzas on the RHs for autox or buy some es100's for the street.

ReagAn- would you be able to machine them sometime around Christmas? love you long time.

you'd have to bring them to Pasadena, but yeah.

I'm having the exact same problem.

ok now from experience. i dont suggest doing this unless your sure you have enough on the back of the rim to fit the hub. i done that to my bronze wheels and in the back thats where the hub comes in to play. the wheel didnt sit flush when mounting and ended up cracking the wheel in the center when i started tightening the lugs. they worked fine on the front, its just the back that screwed up on me. also if you need a place to machine them i know a place you can go to that does good work and is fair priced. just let me know if you want more info. its close to you anyways. peace Marc.

Since you have a wheel with +45 offset 215/35/18 and 7.5" and slammed with no rubbing problems, does that mean I will rub with my +42 offset with the same dimension tires, but with different springs (Eibachs)?

thanks george! i can't decide on a set of wheels for more than a week at a time so if I need any machining i'll let you know
