LSD welding/modification

Hey Guys,

I have a Mazdaspeed 6 and frequent the forums over here. Looking for some info from you protege guys. I am modifying my Ford Escort ZX2 transmission to put in the LSD for the MSP. I got my hands on a perfectly sheared diff that can be easily welded back together. Question is...I've got this box of parts from the guy, he didn't want them. I'm not sure what goes back in the diff! If I can make it work I'm going to cause it'd really help me out on the ice, I'm not worried about vibrations etc. Just want the diff to work. Does anyone have blueprints or schematics for the layout of the diff? I've googled and searched the forums without luck. Thanks guys, anything you can do to help me out would be greatly appreciated.

Try writing going to the tranny or engine part of the forum. I have no idea. Good luck.

Does anyone have an idea as to what's inside an LSD? Is it basically like a standard diff just works differently. Basically are there any parts that could "fall out" when the pieces separate and need welding.

Don't really want to purchase one when I can perfectly weld the one I have. Just need to make sure all the pieces are there.

welding a broken one isn't going to fix it! it will just break again

Yeah like theman said, it'll just break again and probably easier the 2nd time. You'll have balancing issues and a bunch of other crap to deal with and it'll just lash out on the tranny in the end.

As far as I remember from my research the new diff's are just reinforced welded to the gear. I can weld it better than stock after drilling the out rivets (if you can call them that). I have the ability to be able to make sure the welds are pretty well balanced on the diff. I'm not too worried about it as it's going into my ZX2 ice race car. I'll let you guys know how the project turns out.

that's not the issue
the metallurgy of a used diff has changed and the welds just don't stick onto it well... the s*** will just fail again... ask the few people who had a used (unbroken) diff welded, theirs broke

So basically the only good specimen to weld on is a new one that doesn't have all the oils ect already baked into it

Thanks for the info guys. I guess it's worth a try to me. My dad, who's a specialty welder and has been for 35 years seems to think it shouldn't be a problem. However, if it does break it's my racecar and I can swap the tranny out in 4 hours. I'll let you guys know how it goes. Any other information you guys can give with your experiences is greatly appreciated. Apparently the MSP uses the ABS sensors for sending speed information? How does that work. The ZX2 guys that have ran the LSD in theirs have slightly shaved down the LSD to fit the pink VSS gear for the ZX2 to operate the speed sensor. I'd rather not shave down the LSD, I wonder if it's possible to adopt the MSP speed sensor system to my ZX2. Also, does anyone know if the ARP studs are the only replacements for the diff or is there another brand that is cheaper. If not does anyone know the cheapest place to get those ARP studs. Thanks.

the only way to "adopt the MSP speed sensor system" to your car is to install the protege ABS into your car... why would you rather not machine down the LSD to accept the speedo gear? I was the first one to do this and it works fine! the factory does the same thing for a non-MSP open diff!
