Lousy Gas Mileage

Curious if you're using gas with high ethanol content? CX-9 to bicycle. LOL!

Well you know there are more in between choices!

I get 24mpg mixed with a lot of agressive driving in my Mazdaspeed3, and high 28's mixed 50/50 taking it easy. Yeah different car entirely, but just throwing that out there before you go and trade the CX9 in on a big wheel.

Not sure about the ethanol content.....My wife fill sup with regular (87 octane) up here in New Jersey. The dealer (Wayne Mazda) advised that higher octane would not effect my mileage. When does the ethanol content change in th eyear to get better mileage??? Thanks!

that's actually a good point, a gallon of E85 contains 33% less energy than a gallon of regular gasoline and typically results in 25-30% less mileage. E10 which has recently become more the standard around here probably results in about 3% lower mileage (which is pretty small, probably on the order of about 0.5mpg or so but still relevant)

Off of South Jersey gas I'm a consistent 19.5 MPG.

Driving on regular basis from Brooklyn to Uptown (Manhattan) in New York City. 13 MPG Whatever I saved buying CX9 I am going spend on gas..(hand)

I sold my ML 500 , because of gas issues. I think the CX is worst and still has a 3.7 compared to the ML 5.0.(hand)

Some of you guys must be leadfoots. In our '08 CX9 GT FWD, we've consistently gotten 19-21mpg in mixed driving with around 3500 miles on it now. Still have yet to have a tank that's completely city or completely highway.

When in town, we don't take off hard from stoplights, and on the highway it's always between 70-80mph.

I'm gettin 19-20 mpg in DC traffic but I gotta say my jag is way better on gas, i get 28 mpg easy on my jag, considering its a v8 i guess its not bad

I just filled up our CX-9 for the first time since we purchased it. It got 15 mpg, mostly driving around town, with 5 or so 10-mile jaunts on the highway.

And I babied it BIGTIME. Very light on the pedal, didn't go over 70mph on the highway, slow acceleration from lights etc...

Be thankful you didn't get the CX7. I've never gotten better than 14.6 MPG on that brick. My wife gets roughly 18 MPG on her CX9, and we got 25 MPG on the highway out 2500 miles to Oregon and back. Ours is the AWD version.

Wow, we have a 07 CX7 that the wife drives and she is averaging 23 mpg and actually has seen 26 mpg on the highway. I am averaging 28 mpg in speed3 to and from work. Weekends it is closer to 20 MPG. LOL... My sister has an 08 CX9 and they just rave at how much better mileage they get compared to the eddie bauer Explorer they had.

Also... Let me say this, those not used to driving turbos probably get worse mileage than they should as they are all over the gas peddle. Let the turbo do the work with less gas. Those driving CX9's and are NA are out of luck.

Its EPA city rating is either 15 or 16 (AWD, FWD). If you never go more than 5 or 10 miles on the highway, mileage is going to be awfully close to the EPA rating. On tanks that are purely highway, we've seen 22.5 - 23.0, but if it never leaves town, we've seen as low as 14 - 15.

I've been getting between 22 and 23 on higway with my 08-GT AWD measured with the ScanGuage II for about 2 months. I have 8K miles on it and it seems to be pretty consistent.

The ScanGuage will teach you how to drive a bit less aggressively to obtain better mileage. A serious omission in the '08 model that is reportedly in the '09 model.

13.7MPG on my second tank. Ouch. Most city stop and go traffic. GT AWD.....At least gas is only $2.09. I was all over the gas pedal on my 1.8T passat and would get 21-22. Hopefully the engine will loosen up a bit and I'll get up to 16.

Unlikely if it's solely city stop & go traffic. The EPA estimate is 15 or 16 for an AWD city rating, and very few humans drive as gently as the EPA loop. 12-14 is about right if you never get up to 6th gear cruise mode, where mileage of 23 or even 24 is possible at the high end.
