Loud noise From engine bay

I just recently bought a 2003.5 msp and it has a very Vivid personality to say the least. Anyway here recently it has been making a loud bang when running at about 5000 rpm in second going into third gear. when it happens i lose all my power but the engine does not stall out on me. if i shift it right into 4th gear it keeps right on driving just fine. ive tried to replicate the conditions but it seems that it wants to do it at random times if anybody knows what this could be please please let me know because i really love this car so i want to make sure she gets taken care of the right way..

Does it sound like the gears are not engaging properly?

i cant tell if its the gears but i dont think is is because it accelerates just fine but when it does it it does nose dive
