Looks like ill be painting my rims

Yeah so this weekend I went snowboarding, had to use chains, and the chains did NOT agree well with my stock rims. I am strapped for $, and I cant stand to look at knicks and s*** another day. Some of them are like knicks on steroids, just from the goddamn chain rubbing, almost like blisterish w\out paint.

Ive read the how to paint rims on a few sites, and I think I have that covered, any idea on how I would fill the gouges? I was thinking some type of metal epoxy and just sand it down flat?

Color is looking like its going to be slightly darker than the stock silver, maybe titanium or gunmetal, still debating w\ photoshop helpin out a bit. Thanks guys for any help


oh and ps you people that drive in snow 24-7 are ****** mad. Either my car just doesnt like it, (tires more so) or I just suck at it in general. Ended up getting sideways a few times just getting out of the ruts. (boom07)
 
haha, driving in the snow sucks. Especially when you buy performance tires and then dont have the $$ for snow tires. lol. They dont even let us use chains up here (i dont think so at least).

I dont know if bondo would work for filling in those gouges in your rims, i would assume if you sanded it down well enough it would work. Or try and sandblast the entire rim and some of the chips and stuff will level out once you get the factory paint or whatever it is off the rim.
 
Awww, driving in snow is fun! Providing, of course, that there is no one else on the road. It's those other morons you have to worry about. I love to take a drive in the middle of the night in the snow!

Just get some decent snow tires and you're set. Of course, if the snow is much more than 4-5" deep on the road , it can get tough because of clearance issues.
 
yeah the ruts that kept massacring me were real deep, I could hear it scraping, thats why I tried to elude them. but they won, taking my naked RSA (real suck ass) in the back and basically flinging me around. I had fun doin it and thankfully the oncomming traffic was sparce, and the people behind me gave me room after the first time it happend lol, they were probably like what a moron, but in reality I just didnt wanna get stuck.

IM SO CAL born and raised, that was my first real snow driving experience... here it is broken down
-getting sideways on a 2 laner
-chewing up my rims
-driving 4 hours down the mountain that takes less than an hour w\out snow on the road

Haha sums it up right there.

Tomorrow I have a rematch with the snow, and ill leave early enough to mess around w\ my chains so they dont sit on my rims =(

i love driving in the snow, it is all about practice. this was my first year with snow tires, i drove tha last 6 with bald summers. interesting times but i never had a real problem.
if you are painting them i would just take them to get powdercoated, gun metal or black would be nice. Maybe its time to get some aftermarket rims.
 
man, this isnt making me feel any comfortable about going to big bear with my car. i have never driven in snow with my car so i'm kinda scared to especially with these stock tires. i have the tire cables for the rear/sides are those good enough?

If your not comfortable then dont do it. Borrow someones SUV or truck if you can. Ive been driving in the snow for the last 6 years and driving in the MOUNTAINS and in the snow is wayy worse. It is fun thought, when your on flat land and the roads are straight, you can practice sliding around in your car and stuff.
This winter i was driving around my house and some freak ice storm hit where i was for only about 5 minutes, it was a mess. I was going down the highway and then everyone stopped, and when it was time to go again i realized i was trying to go up hill. I had summer tires so i couldnt even make it up the hill, and it wasnt even a big hill.
 
i wouldn't drive in more then 2" of snow with the rsa's.... not sure how those cables are going to help you out as i have never used them before but if you aren't comfortable in the snow i would suggest what mazda3zoom said and look into borrowing a 4wd vehicle or maybe an awd subby or something, don't f your car up just trying to go skiing/boading...
 
on topic... take some pics of the wheels so i can see how bad the "knicks on roids" are and i may be able to suggest something to use or ask around (i work in a machine shop) these guys are pretty knowledgable when it comes to s*** like that...
 
It sucks for those of you who dont' get snow regularly. But here in Utah, we get dumped on every year. SO its either learn how to drive in it, or don't leave your house for 4 months.
Its really not that hard with a decent set of snow tires and some steelies.
 
On sunday there were some good 6 inch ruts, and it was still on top of snow. I think its just the RSA's that suck. made it fine today, the snow wasnt as bad and was a bit slushy.
I go to Bear, only gone to mountain high once.

I think I was just a dumbass and didnt put them on right which is why they rubbed on my rim. I just got home, polished up the marks, they arent so bad except 2 dime sized spots on my drivers side rim.

lol I may end up just going to a tire shop and having that rim put on my rear passanger side of my car so I dont see it everyday getting into my car. If I go as far to powdercoat im just getting new rims...

Update

well I filled the scratches in with some bondo, sanded, primed and painted my rims, I went with a gunmetal grey. Im waiting for the paint to dry a bit and then clearcoat time. Overly not a hard thing to do, but waiting for the coats to dry and not applying too much paint is taking its toll. I ****** up on one rim, paint drip, so in a few days ill sand it back down and redo it.

I was feeling rather sick as I roughed up my rims with sandpaper, like nervous about it. I feel pretty confident they are going to come out nicely now.

Will have pics tomorrow.

J/k man, the rims look good. You should look into some lowering springs though.

it looks good man, i cant wait to see how it looks when its all done. I have been wanting to do mine as well but i dont have the balls. If your come out alright then i know i cant do worse than a little surfer guy. j/k
 
I was mswerd-ing the "it looks good" part! It really does look awesome. nice job.

but springs never hurt anyone either!
 
Yeah... but then he won't be able to get his chains on. :D
