Looking into a Protege 5

Hey Folks,

Been lusting over the Protege 5's design for a few years now and have finally come across a very very good deal on a White 5.

The car is a 2003, has 73 500 kilometers/45 670 miles on the clock and was wondering what some things are that I should be looking out for prior to purchasing the automobile?

Thanks in advance,

Matt.

I'm in the same boat as you, sooo to the community:

What should be looking for when we buy P5s? What are the common problems?

I'll start
1. rear calipers get very rusty & lock up :D

There are not anything that commonly brake on P5's. They are very reliable. There are probably a few things you should look out for mechanically though:

  • Always run a carfax report on all cars you are buying
  • Listen for any wierd sounds or squeeks from the car
  • Is there any excesive body role from the car(bad struts)
  • Look at the cars overall appearence. If the interior is dirty and stained, dirty engine bay, and dents and scratchs on the exterior then it is most likely the car was not treated or maintained very well which could lead to other mechanical problems
  • And you can always have you mechanic look at the car before buying it, and if the person refuses your request to do so don't buy the car
  • Is the clutch peddle nice and firm or loose. If it is loose the clutch needs replacing.

Those are all the things I can think of. Hope that helps, and good luck.

I have my P5 for about 6 months & I love it. If you are getting a 5 speed, spend 100 bucks and put a B&M short shifter in. You'll be so glad you did! Also , check your motor mounts. I found my front one was torn.
