2002 Protege5 5-Speed in Classic Red
Hey guys, I'm fresh to the P5 scene and I'm looking for a much-better-than-stock exhaust. I want a lower, throaty growl similar to a STI or WRX versus the high pitch whine of many JDM exhausts out there.
Any suggestions??
All input would help!

wrx and stis sound the way they do because of the opposing piston motor (boxer) u will never sound that way unless u sell ur car lol find a mazdaspeed protege exhaust its cheap and sound better than stock or go make a custom exhaust...

They actually sound that way due to the header design, not because there a boxer. Its due to uneven pulses attributed to the header design IIRC.

Check out cherry bomb exhausts. They have different types for different sounds; glasspacks and compact designs.

magnaflow is probably the throatiest off the shelf exhaust. pair it with a replacement single-cat mid-pipe and a header, and you will be pleased.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but cherry bombs sound pretty awful across the board. They're the bargain basement of exhausts. Magnaflow and Racingbeat will be your best quality options.

This is true but y is the manifolds designed the way they are and not made like staandard v6s v8s or 4s maybee because its a boxer motor and has opposing pistions. Therefore its sounds the way it does because of the motor as a whole including headers .... and what does IIRC mean? Never seen it used b4 .

They are made the same. Inline 4s are irrelevant and a different matter as the cylinders are in a row (Same with Inline Sixes). Otherwise they are made the same, compare a American v8 in something base modelish and their headers to the headers used by the Ford GTO. Both are baser around the same cross plane base yet one sounds like a traditional cross-plane V8 while the other sounds more refined. (Proper Ford GTO not a copy of such)

The uneven pulses cause the classic boxer sound that people associate with them, this is due to the lengths between the two banks being different. Ever notice that porches don't have the same problem? Or for that matter the FA20/4UGSE used in the FT86/BRZ.

http://www.doudna.com/Subaru/

apparently we are both right motor and exhaust manifold turbo cars dont have headers bro

im sure its more motor than manifold tho ... as the link will agree

lets get this back on topic tho if u want to continue this send me a pm since i feel we are thread jacking lol

.....op have u found an exhaust u liked yet

You make the assumption that all Boxer engines are turbo. Header = exhaust manifold, its just a different term for a different platform.

If its all the engine then why do Porches and FT86/BRZs not have the same rumble?

It comes down to this every engine will have different characteristics based on the crank design, header, head etc etc. 4AGE sounds different to a B18C, our FS sounds a hell of a lot different again. These are all of the same design yet different characteristics, if you could get an unequal header to the same extent there would be some burble. Reread the article you posted he even states that an even length header will achieve the same sound as a normal inline 4.

wow dude really again with this send me a pm bro this thread isnt about me and u. bottom line a p5 isnt a subaru and it will never sound like one

+1 for Magnaflow. Had one on my Civic and it sounded great and held up nicely over a few harsh winters before selling the car.

I'd have one on my P5 now if I wasn't so cheap.

i've got an axle back with the Tanabe Tuner Hyper Medallion, and I like it. Super quiet really, but has a nice note. In-cab tone is just lovely...nice and throbby without all that drone on the highway. It's not subaru deep...it's not really that deep at all, but it throbs...

I like mine, I wish I knew what brand it was because it came with the car. Searching "bullet" doesn't really help as it's such a generic name, and who knows where that sticker came from. The resonator is definitely a Dynomax Bullet muffler, maybe that's where the sticker is from? It has a nice deep sound, not blatty or obnoxious to outsiders at all. Growing up with Mustangs I hate most 4-banger exhausts but when wife drives my car I like hearing it drive away.

As for Subaru sounds, my 65 Corvair with a boxer six, no headers, and Borlas sound just like a Subaru with aftermarket exhaust. Go figure, right?

Your exhaust is a JIC Magic, a pretty nice Japanese brand.
