the advantage to placing the gauge cluster in the middle is it makes it easier to manufacture cars for right and left hand drive markets. they can use one dash layout, and just swap out the gauge surround, as opposed to fabricating a whole new dash assembly. plus they can make all the parts under the dash compatable as well, and they ultimatly save on production cost. i wouldn't really say that they are copying the echo, as tehre are a number of other cars that do this also. (bwm z8 is the first to come to mind)
