Thought I'd sign up after reading some threads on some recent issues I was working on.
Im the second owner a 2002 Protege 5 that I bought when it was about 6 months old and now have about 190k miles on it. Just this last week. I noticed the valve cover gasket was leaking and had also an occasional miss when starting up for the day or after a couple hours of no use.
The valve cover gasket was simple to change out but still seems to have a little bit of a leak I think, or just still some of the left over oil that got out while changing. Going to watch it and see what happens. If it continues I will pull the cover again and check it out and put down a thin bead of RTV. I have re-tightened the bolts a couple of times but since I just moved and don't have my tool box yet, so don't have my torque wrench.
Shortly before changing out the valve cover gasket there was an occasional miss when starting up for the day. This wasn't the first problem with the miss since I have had to change the coils 2 previous times. I picked up a new set with a set of wires and changed them out one at a time. Turns out just one coil was bad, so will be saving the one good old oil coil and keeping that in the car in case I have another failure down the road and not close to home.
