Cresting the 30,000-mile mark in our MS3 sees us officially 60-percent complete with our long-term evaluation and due for another service. Our maintenance costs so far are but a fraction of either the GS 450h's or XK's when they crossed the same point, perhaps because we are still on the original Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires the same ones Feature Editor Mike Monticello was on for its Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca initiation. Mind you, we are nearing the wear bars, as some recent rainstorms have revealed, but we are impressed with the run we've had on them.

With our brand-new purge solenoid in its rightful place, we haven't been visited by our amber informer since, but have received a couple of service bulletins (4807H and 4907H) pertaining to an ECU reflash and replacement of the variable-swirl shutter valve (which supposedly would stick closed due to a weak spring). After these updates were performed, our MS3 feels to have a better torque band without such an abrupt fall-off at the top end.

So with the powertrain now completely sorted and happy, the suspension was feeling a little left out and quickly told us so. A couple of editors who had taken extended trips on separate occasions in the MS3 had identical complaints that the suspension felt as if it were bottoming out on pronounced bumps so bad sometimes that they pulled over to see if they had a flat. It turned out our right front shock decided to take an unannounced vacation, so a replacement was installed under warranty.

The overall dynamics of our beloved pocket rocket have definitely been restored but we feel we need to revisit the occasionally audible "thunk" coming from the rear suspension as it articulates down some driveways.

"Break out the butter and blueberry jam, because the front shocks are toast! The degraded handling, wheel hop under hard acceleration and increased torque steer really show just how vital good shock control is on a car that sends 263 bhp through only its front tires."

I have some of the same issues with mine. I get a thunk backing out of my driveway and my shocks are something, eh, yeah. I might drop er off for a refresh. :)

What is a purge solenoid and a variable-swirl shutter valve?

purge solenoid is for the fuel system (has to do with the pressures in the system to make sure no HCs escape into the atmosphere)....don't know about the shutter valve one

according to the report, they were replaced under warranty. Besides, shocks are cheap as hell, and an easy DIY repair.

Sounds like a lot of us will be in the market for new shocks as the stock ones appearantly suck ass as they are good for only about 30k miles. :(
THat's going to be expensive.

You should sell your car. Seriously.

If the stock ones only last 30k miles I will probably just buy better after-market shocks. Didn't realize they are "cheap as hell"

shocks and worn suspension parts I can deal with on a car as it gets some miles on it. What scares me is a piston hanging out the side of the block.

Yeah a piston hanging out of the side of your block is never a good thing.

As far as suspension parts getting worn after only 30k miles, I'm just a little surprised. Maybe it's just me but I would have thought the shocks would last a bit longer. Doesnt mean I want or should sale my car as one assjack has indicated.

Why? Because I think shocks should last longer than 30kmiles?

No, because anytime anyone says anything about something "less than good news" about their MS3 you worried it's going to happen to you.

This car is not an investment. It's for fun and enjoyment. I hope you're having fun with your car and are not worried about every little bump in the road.

Purge solenoid opens a path to clear out the charcoal cannister - it absorbs gas fumes when the car is sitting.

Variable-swirl valve is in the intake manifold; it closes off one valve to each cylinder at low RPMs/power levels.

Purge solenoid is a common failure in these cars.

Variable-swirl valve was a design issue in the early '07 cars - fixed under warranty/recall.

As we used to say in the jeep community, a failure is merely an opportunity to upgrade :)

His rig was Jeep tough with chevy stuff LOL

How would you be able to tell yours failed?
You get a CEL. Something like evap cannister leak.

This is no biggie, doesn't affect anything except a tiny bit of emissions. Dealer fixes it with a new valve.

And what would be the symptoms of a faulty swirl valve? I have a scanner, so is there something I can monitor to check for this? I have an early '07 model.

If your valve is faulty I believe you will get a cel thrown... Im going off bad memory here but I believe the faulty valve was a common reason for the rash of cels some 07's were throwing...

Actually you dont need to sell your car just need to take a statistics class... you can NOT assume because ONE car had a bad shock that hence ALL the shocks in ALL the MS3's wont last past 30k miles...for all we know one of their editors had a large pothole in front of their house they hit every day or the guy assembling the shock was pissed at his girlfriend that day and took it out on the shock....why is it that so many here in the forum always assume one person's problem is a recuring widespread issue across the entire model

In reality if you read the magazine and all the reports on a consistent basis this long term report is rather good... a lot of cars out there take 10x the maintenance cost with a lot more issues reported...
