While I liked Wichita when I visited, it did seem a bit small. Personally I think St. Louis is a good middle ground between big cities and small towns. I grew up here and moved out west after college (got real tired of small towns after 5 years of it.) I spent about a year between Colorado, Wyoming, North Dakota, and Montana. I moved back due to various reasons and have been happy here. Any more specifics about what you are looking for in terms of night life, activities, etc? Hope this helps.

Ah cool Roy.
St. Louis, is it really 20 or so miles from Scott AFB? My wife & I are both creatures of the night and would dig the night life. She's into everything and I'm into just about the same. I love the outdoors (and after hearing her response about me camping out @ Petit Le Mans with the GACC members a few years back...I guess she's not haha), of course motor sports would be great etc. What's area like? Housing? We'll probably be renting if base housing isn't readily available. Colleges/Uni's close by? How's the cultural atmosphere?

Voted for NJ for all of the reasons posted throughout the thread.

Word...New Jerz & DC are the big time front runners.

How are the states up north about cars from out of state?
If you f**kers have emissions, I'm keeping them registered in 'Bama.
Also...front & rear tags? Or no front?

I'm not sure about the laws regarding the registration in either PA or NJ (I think you will be fine though, since you are active duty) but both states have emissions. NJ has front/rear plates...PA is rear only.

MD is front plate as well. I'm not sure about the out of state requirements, but emissions is every two years and when I get new tags on Friday I can let you know how much it is for two years.

DC is the warmest of your options, but the traffic does suck and PG County doesn't thrill me. In recent years, we've experienced more ice than snow, but even that lasts less than a week and is towards the end of winter, ie. Jan./Feb. on and we don't normally have much of a spring, jumping from 40* weather to 60+* pretty quick and then I'd say our summer matches ATL's pretty well. Having said that, there is a shitload of activities to do around here, it's close to FedEx Field for autox and housing prices have been plummeting. I'm a Federal contractor and there is no shortage of contract work in this area, esp. if you have a clearance. VA is front tags and I think DC is as well, but I'd ask Nate to make sure on that one. And both require emissions too. Oh, and if you want to do track days, we have Summit Point and VIR. :D

Hmmm....that sounds pretty good actually. I have not spent much time in the DC/VA area...but at least I know it's pretty military/govt employee friendly for the most part. Seems the majority is aiming me towards DC.

What part of VA do you live in? You mentioned you're a contractor, so I assume a nice place in the suburbs. ;) I wouldn't mind finding a place a little out of the way of the hustle & bustle, but don't really mind the traffic/travel (Turkey is crazy traffic and crazier drivers), as long as it is within reason and it's relatively close to the base (or I can jump on the I & get there quickly).

I have a TS clearance btw.

Lived in Northern Virginia/ DC area all of my life. It really is a great place if you like the suburb kind of life style. It's not exactly all city and it's not all country either. I will say we have some of the worst traffic in the U.S. next to Southern California. Don't count on the beltway to get you anywhere fast.

Hmmm...good to know. Thanks for the heads up on the traffic & the housing selection. I do prefer suburban living over living in the city. The time I spent in Alabama was really country (lol), but I lived in dorms, a town house & my own free standing house on 1 acre. Since I have been here in Turkey, it's been all hustle trying to find parking etc and I REALLY hate living in an apartment. Time to get back to a house....plus with 2 cats & hopefully a medium sized dog in the near future...a house outside of the city with a yard works.

Wow...in just 1 day, the NJ people have come out and voted.
Currently it's:
DC with 12 people = 42.86%
NJ with 11 people = 39.29%
IL with 05 people = 17.86%
KS with 00 people = 0%

Woodbridge, so a bit too far away from Andrews, commute-wise. In this area, you want to avoid having the Woodrow Wilson Bridge as part of your commute as that really does suck.

If you were closer to Chicago I'd say do it but you are closer to STL so blah and eh.

Thanks for your input Kiwi 6. So you're basically saying the areas around McGuire are better to live in than DC...I'm assuming you are referring to crime etc.?

I really enjoyed my brief stay in Jerz, but hated it's 'jug handles'...what's with not being able to make a u-turn business!? Plus all the Italian restaurants...yo...that was crazy good.

IF it was my choice. I woud rather be in the Philly/Jerzy area. Better choices of neighborhoods/ school districts for rasing kids ( if you have/ thinking about.) I grew up in Bucks County. Which borders New Jersey along the Delaware river. You can find some very nice areas along the river (pricey), But if you go a little further into Pa. less expensive nice size homes and lots. Jersey will also be affordable for your housing depending on where you go. Taxes are much higher there then PA. But location I feel is great. What you shoud do if you can get some time is to do lots of research. Go out there or Check out City-data.org. Forum based website which you can get real life info about different places.

Some places to check out in Jersey would be the Sommerville/Manville.Fullerton/Route 202. Have family in that area. Small townish but overall not to bad,.

PA. Newtown/Yardley/Newhope/Sulbury areas. Little more pricey but very quick access to Jersy as they are on the river.

Also with Gov't Contracting. There is BAE Systems (great place with works with them here in DC), Northrup Crummon (spell?) and lots of other ones. Just cant think of the names

Hope this helps
