Well I took the old girl to MidOhio race track last weekend and had a freakin blast. I ran the Hyperdrive which is 30mins classroom time and 20-30mins on track time with an instructor. The track time simply flew by! I wanted to stay out there all day! But it was really fun and I had a great time hanging out with friends and watching the HPDE and TT classes run on the track. I'll definetly be out there in 2011 running some more Hyperdrive events. I'm not too sure on the HPDE1 class though. That may be a little too much abuse for my daily driver. But who knows.

Here are some pics my friend James (jri4) took;

I just found out my P5 will be paid off next week so I'm thrilled about that. I've been paying on it for the last 2-1/2 years and didn't even realize my pay off was $219. Haha!

Then I'm debating on boosting the P5 or buying an FC RX7 if I can find a decent TurboII...

that last pic is my favorite! ...car says, "i'm coming for you!!!" hahaha

and wow!, you are obsessed with FC's now!!!

i think that i've kind of decided that i'm just going to sell my turbo stuff that would go on the protege and anything that i can make work with the FC i'll put on there... like the front mount and other gauges...

Hell yes! Finally you've seen the light! Haha!

Yeah- Kevin, you're FC is really nice. It just needs some work and cleaned up a bit. Plus RWD is just the way to go. Wes took me for a ride in his 90' Miata yesterday and I drove it a little. They are fun, but open cockpits scare me so I don't think I'll get one of those. I'm hoping to have something to work on over the winter in the garage so we'll see.

ps- the last pic is one of my favorites too. I like how James said "What is this, a Spec Protege race?". Haha

Evan, FC's are even worse when it comes to dumping money into them. TII FC's are EVEN WORSE! I really wanted a TII at first, but after owning an N/A for a year and doing the hyperdrive event I'm pretty satisfied with it. Sure I'll never have 300 rwhp (and be driveable) but it's nice to know that I can drive it to the track, flog the crap out of it and drive back all with over 100k miles.

Thanks, Jon. I respect your opinion very much so maybe I'll just hold off on an FC, at least until I do much more research. I want something fun, small and rear wheel drive and wanted to stick with the Mazda family but I don't really want a Miata. Your FC is super nice and I just love the way yours and Kevins look. I've just been kinda thinking outloud lately... The more I think about it the more I should just buy a motorcycle. heh-heh

Thanks, Ryan. I still think I'll pass on a Miata. No offense or anything. I know a lot of P5 guys also have Miata's. I just don't feel comfortable in them.

Hey Jon, what are your thoughts on turboing my P5? I think you and I have similar work ethic and ideas when it comes to builds and your P5t was very nice. If you had the opportunity to turbo a P5 again, would you? My motor has 125k miles on her but doesn't burn any oil, still pulls well and runs just fine. I've never had any issues with the motor (or the entire car, really) other than the vacuum leak which was my fault from not tightening the intake mani bolts hard enough when I did my VTCS removal. So I was thinking of just going with a simple and reliable MSP turbo setup. Nothing over 8lbs of boost. Just for a little more zoom-zoom. And I would do it right and get it tuned. I think you know how I work, we're on the same page with workmanship and quality parts. Opinions?

Well, I guess I'll start that before you even consider turbo'ing you need to make sure your engine is up to it. You say it doesn't burn oil - that's a good start. Do you have catless exhaust? I ask because it's easy to tell if you're getting any smoke at start up or acceleration without the cat (visual and via smell). Definitely do a compression test though a leakdown test would be even better. I know this seems like a lot but higher mileage FSDE's don't have the best reputations.

As far as the choice to turbo the P5, like you said, we're pretty much the same there. My P5 was my daily driver (in college) and I turbocharged it with relatively no problems (most, if not all, were my own fault). I didn't start to burn oil until a year or so after it was turbocharged. That being said, the hardest thing about going that route is it really takes control to know where to stop. I originally had plans like what you have, but in the end I ended up with the be-all-end-all exhaust manifold, the MAM, was in the 505zoom IM group buy and had a bunch of other "go faster" goodies. Basically, my next step was a built motor and bigger turbo. If you think you can restrain yourself then I'd say go for it!

As for doing it again, I do think I'd like something along the lines of a slightly modified, fun daily driver because more and more I find myself tempted to turn the RX-7 into a full-out race car. I probably wouldn't do a P5 again because my wife already has a four-door car and at some point I had to step back and say "this is a FWD, 4-cylinder, four-door car, not a race car or even a sports car". That being said, I'll probably have a little fun with my Tacoma once its warranty has expired. However, if I didn't already have three vehicles (including the wife's) I'd probably look into an older 1st Gen Protege to play with (I'd love a GTX).

Sorry for the long-winded post, LOL!

Hey Evan... DaveB found a nice clean FC GXL for sale near him for $2700...

Hokay, well I would advise you to go for a second car. Having a project car, that you can walk away from for a while, or sit on definitely helps. FCs are way sweet, just kind of pricey and not dime a dozen like miatae.

I still love my p5, but it's just not that great of a starting point for something serious. If you really wanted to stick with the p5, I think you should go for a KL, that's a much better engine than the FS.

Problem with a KL swap is that where we live it's illegal to put an engine older than the car in it. It won't pass our inspections.

While I normally would praise the glory of the Miata, it's definitely not fitting for Evan. I know that for a fact.

That being said... I vote for an EG hatch project.

hey Lewis!! Great set up!!

two question from me tho:
1) Your kartboy short shifter is for protege5 or no? And where can I get it and is it gonna be hard to install?
2) Is your lip a type R lip for Honda Accord from ebay? And I do see that your front bumper looks a little different from mine, can I still install that type R lip from ebay?

Thanks, mate!

1~ I do have the Kartboy shifter for the Protege5. I got one of the last ones produced about 2 years ago. However, I do believe that Kartboy sold the design and they are now available but under a different company name. But I can't remember who... But they do pop up in the For Sale section of this forum once in a while, just gotta keep an eye out for one. They aren't hard to install at all. Just some simple hand tools and about an hour or two to install. There are plenty of How-To's out there for the install and most companies include directions with their short shifters. I reccomend buying a quality brand short shifter as opposed to an eBay brand though. I bought an eBay short shifter for my Civic and it literally snapped in my hand on the first hard shift.

2~ It's not the Type-R lip, it's a JDP replica lip I modified to fit my front bumper. I have the stock Protege5 front bumper, just with the fog lights removed and the fog deletes installed. I bought the lip from another member on here and lightly customized it to fit. All the info is in the How-To I wrote up and linked for you above.

If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask. =)

Honestly, not to sound like a snob or anything, but I don't buy many parts from eBay. If you think about it, you're using the short shifter A LOT. That's a piece I wouldn't cheap out on. But I've heard Megan Racing has come a long way since the early days when they were just cheap knock-off parts. For me, I would buy a quality short shifter for the piece of mind. TWM does make wonderful pieces (I have their weighted shift knob). And don't forget the shifter bushings. =)

This is why I like this thread! Still can't wait to get a chance to meet you Evan, and check out your car.

I had a poorly manufactured short shifter (OBX I believe) on my Civic. The engineering was total s*** and must have put too much stress in weird places because it shattered the shifter fork for the 3rd / 4th gear switch. The car was stuck in 4th gear.

I pianted my Corksport muffler flat black and my winter wheels Orange this weekend. They both came out really well. I really like that Apex offers mufflers in flat black because I like to be low-key. Well, until I put these outrageous orange wheels on. haha. But I also painted my GReddy muffler flat black and they just look better imo.

I was going to paint the wheels Takata green but my friend suggested orange and I actually really dig them. They're just winter wheels so i can always paint them some other colour next summer again.

I also installed some Mazda Trubite windshield washer nozzles I bought from another member. Super easy install and they are SO much better than the stock pissers.
