I just don't see the point of using a torque wrench for "ballpark"? If you're using a torque wrench in the first place it should be torqued to spec.

We should have a "torque wrench round-up' and test all the brands that all us local cats have. That would be interesting to see how close or far off they are to each other.

ps- not bashing anyone, we're all friends here.
 
Disclaimer- I'm not saying "my torque wrench is better than yours!". I don't play that babygame BS. But a torque wrench face off would be fun. I'll contact my other local buddies.

How would we test them though? Ideas?

I figures three settings, like light, medium and high torque. I figure we could just use a bolt somewhere on a car or motor and measure the threads and if some wrenches click before/after others? I'll have to look online after work for ideas, I'm sure this has been covered before.

I am not sure what the "face off" will accomplish other than any number of torque wrenches not reading the same. IIRC a torque wrench should be calibrated once a year. Rolling around in a tool box and abuse will make them read off, for that matter regular use over time will do the same. Not an expert just going through my memory banks of random information.

Oh I know you're not playing that game. I'm just stating that without calibration, any good torque wrench is a piece of junk.

As far as testing it... yeah... none of us will be able to do that without proper equipment, like load blocks and a dyno (not the type for cars)
 
How is that HB wrench Phen? I've been looking at a Craftsman which is $70, 1/2 drive 20-150ft/lbs.
 
dunno. It's still sitting in the box, waiting for me to actually want to work on a car again. At this point, I have no desire.
 
Ah...well today is your lucky day. Breaking out the wrench to "wrench" on your car so you can give me invalualbe first hand experience and feedback is knocking at your door. haha I'm sure the HB would serve me well enough for the amount I would use it.

For the example of the axle nut the torque spec in the service manual is 174-235 ft-lbs. That works out to 204.5 15%.

I trust that the HF stuff is better than 15% :)

Most of the values given in the service manual are 10%-15% so you don't need a very accurate tool to be within "spec". Just set the tool to the middle of the range and you'll most likely be fine.
 
Yeah. Most of the nuts and bolts are installed using robots anyway right? Now, if we're talking a high performance car (we alll drive Mazdas here, so definitely not the case), then that's a different story.

Well since this is a build thread, I should mention my "building". I worked on refinishing my ASA dd wheels. They're ready for the tires to be mounted then painted gloss black. Yes, gloss black is "played out" and I don't care. I got some stuff together to sell and took pics. And cleaned up a bit in the garage.

I'm patiently waiting for warmer weather so I can paint my rear hatch and clear my CF hood at work. I need to repair my rust spots better than I did 2 years ago. Farking Ohio winters... But funny nonetheless.

I didn't read all this, but I would love to compare my old torque wrench to someone else's. I'm sure mine is off after so much use and how old it is.
 
When I worked at the extrusion factory, I asked the maintenance guys if there was a way to check the accuracy of a torque wrench. They looked at me like I had green skin, so I guess they'd never done it before. Then they had a good laugh when I asked if the HF tools were any good. I don't really like it when people are blindly biased like that, but they ended up saying they'd trust a Craftsman Pro out of the box to assemble an engine, and also said to never drop a torque wrench, or loan it to anyone. The last two tips were from experience.

I've only used my torque wrench for my lug nuts and spark plugs. I figured 5% of the very few ft/lbs that the plugs are torqued to would be pretty inconsequential. So far so good. (shrug) But I'm game for the "torque wrench warz" at the bbq!

I had some pretty bad clunking when turning sharp corners and my alignment was off. I installed two front, outer tierods (from RockAuto for $28 a piece) and my P5 is turning nice and smooth again. I'm so glad. I have an appointment scheulded for an alignment monday morning.
