I was kinda thinking of suggesting the studs, but knew they're not cheap. That's the route I'm going to go when I swap heads on my Civic.

head studs FTW, much easier to work with when putting the head on, much easier to install (no torque then angle torque crap), AND they are reusable
at least the ARP studs are, dont know of any other brands

Good read indeed! Well, I just ordered the head bolts when i ordered my head gaskets. I'm not going to do anything crazy with this motor so I'm sure they'll be fine. IF I boost it next year, then I'll upgrade them then.

I don't want to know... heh-heh. I just updated the 2nd post with parts I've already bought. I'm leary to total it up. I know this still won't be a fast car even after I sink $3k into it but it will be fun, reliable and low miles. I've got 130k miles on my original FS-DE and love my car too much to buy something new. I wanted a project for the winter so this has been a lot of fun. I like cars to work on them, the final result is just a perk.

-edit- I gave in. So far the total is about $1800.

Keep in mind I did not evolve from the Protege lineage so I do not know much about them...and you may have already discussed this with more knowledgeable cats...but are you sure about wanting an OBX header. The word on the grapevine I'm hangin' from says there are better options out there--you get what you pay for.

Other than that, if you keep it under $4000 I'd say it was well worth your hard work knowing you did it all by yourself by hand! Get to it! Oh, and I'm free now and want to help, so let me know when you are working on it, especially Tues, Thurs. nights.

That's pretty good. Idk thinking about doing a KL swap. Sell the SC kit and do a Kl swap. lol depending on how it goes with the dyno this coming spring.

If you keep it under $4k then you did better than my Civic swap. LOL.

I would personally go for the Pacesetter headers since you know they give good gains. If you're rocking the Greddy exhaust after the swap, I think you'll be golden for sound.

I don't remember reading that OBX even made headers for the KL. I don't think I've ever seen them listed in a mod list on PT, or maybe I just haven't been looking very hard. Unlike some motors, it's hard to make the KL sound like anything but hot wet sex. I've probably already posted this a few times, but it's my personal fav, and the SSAC is ebay stuff, so I'm not really sure if that says anything..

And this one, with no muffler. Can't really tell from his mod list, but I think it might be the bosal header. The echo is the greatest

Evan...I also have much more free time now that School is over. I'm definitely down to come over and help out. I want to learn more and the best way is experience! Just let me know when you need some help. You've helped me out a few times, so I want to return the favor!

Chipmunk and Evan #2, thanks for the offer to help guys, I greatly appreciate it. I probably won't need any help until the spring when it's ready to be swapped in. I've been working incredibly slow on the motor so it would probably drive anyone else batty.

HK- your P5 is badass, you can't sell the SC! Or if you do go KL you can always use the SC on the KL. That would be even badassererer. But yeah, the spring dyno session will be the moment of truth for sure. Just make sure you buy a straight neck JDM KLZE (200hp) and not a JDM Millenia KL (170hp), learn from my mistake. heh-heh.

Wes, those videos are pretty rad. I'm sure the KL will sound great with the GReddy muffler regardless of which headers I go with.

As far as the headers go; the Pace Setters are painted steel, so they will rust and I shouldn't wrap them, they sound pretty raspy which I don't want to live with everyday, but they have the most power gains and they are $262 at Summit. The OBX headers are on eBay and many stores and are about $330 shipped, are stainless steel and have the flex pipe and sound pretty good. I've read some reviews about the SSAC not fitting very well. But are basically OBX copies. I'm typically not a fan of OBX or Pace Setter since they are inexpensive brands with mixed reviews but the I know that those two brands will fit the Protege chasis. I'll look onto Bosal right now, I've seen them around but thought they weren't manufactured anymore? I'm not really hip to buying used headers so I wanted something new.

And I just unloaded my transmission from the truck. I'll unwrap it and bring it home tonight. It came with the starter, half shaft, tranny mounts and clutch and flywheel (even though I'm not using those). The half shaft and starter are the parts I really wanted anyway. Just cross my fingers the bolt holes line up for the halfshaft mount to the block. I've read the years are wonky and are all sorts of different bolt patterns.

And I got my 1994 manual PGT wiring harness in today. It looks pretty good. I'm going to clean it all up and re-wrap it in wire loom and electrical tape.

Wiring is the thing I want to get sorted and never have to f with again. haha. The good news is I have most of the wiring harness that came with the KL, the PGT harnesses and my Protege harness so I should be good on connectors. And I have no problem soldering and wiring things the right way. It's just deciphering the wiring schematics that I literally have nightmares about... That's where Phen comes in. haha

edit- peekturs are fun. The trans is in the garage now AND my tranny saver brace will fit, phew. There are some transmission mounts that were too thick and wouldn't work with the brace. But mine bolts up fine.

Now I've got the wiring harness on the kitchen table ready to be labelled and cleaned up. And I've got my reading to do before bed; the Haynes Manual with how to replace the headgaskets. I want to have that s*** memorized for saturday when I change them. heh-heh

I'd recommend wire loom, and I dunno if there's good quality electrical tape that stands up over time. I mean the harness was wrapped with some to start with, but I re-wrapped the cord on my antique impact wrench, and after using it for a few months it looked just as bad as when it started out. Maybe it's okay if it doesn't move a lot, but I dunno about the heat. Research is required!

Most factory harnesses use electrical tape on their looms anyway.

Research is always required! Haha! We even research what electrical tape to use, that's how lame we are. Our KL's are gunna be dope, yO. I'll just order some 3M from McMaster-Carr. I love that my work has an account with them. I order the stuff I want and it's at work the next day and I give my boss the receipt and cash.

I have about 200 rolls of electrical tape left at my parents house. I wish I could remember what brand it was, but it holds up rather well.
