A VAF? The DE has one, and from what I hear, it's restrictive. The G4 is supposed to have the MAF iirc.

That's what I saw too.

The Probe guys put the 626 5th gear in cus it's taller. You know, the Probe is a race car and the 626 isn't, I guess..

Maybe I don't mean "taller". I just mean it would be nice to have a tranny with a 5th gear that doesn't make the motor rev so high at 70mph. I'm not looking for top speed or anything.

ZE IM will require port matching (square ZE ports versus oval/round G4 ports) plus it doesn't have the EGR that you talked about earlier. I was going to say I don't know how hard it would be to drill a hole in it to put one in, but apparently it doesn't even have a space for one. I just looked on the DE vs ZE vs G4 page and the conclusion seems to be that the G4 is the best flowing IM with EGR, and if you already have a G4 motor, why not use that IM? You can still port and knife edge it, and should get some gains! Unless it doesn't fit under your hood? H00d sk00p!

Well s***, I'll just stick with the G4 then. And I'll port it a little bit and polish it as well. I've done that on my FS-DE IM with a Dremel and it's pretty simple.

I think they're supposed to offer the best performance gain (while sounding the worst?), but you could also try the Hotshot headers, or something else. Go custom! Fabricate the first ever LMS KL longtube headers!

I'm not looking for custom anything, mate. Haha! I'll look into headers more after I get the motor.

You're worried about swapping cams but not about switching the gears in a tranny? I've never done either, but personally the tranny sounds about 100x harder to me. Besides, I've got all the literature on how to remove and replace cams. ;)

Again, I meant buying a tranny that had a taller 5th gear simply for highway cruising. I didn't mean I would swap out my P5 gears into the new tranny. That's too scary for me. And I will certainly use your info on cams. I would like to remove the OEM cams and clean the valves anyway so I might as well replace them with some better cams while they're out.

Personally I would not put one on and then I'd see how it is. You can always add one later without too much extra work, right? Or am I on the pipe?

I believe you're right. Taking the tranny out shouldn't be too difficult later down the road if I want to put in an LSD.

Ok, I'd just try to find a v6 626 tranny. The taller 5th gear makes your revs lower at highway speeds and gives you a higher top speed, not that it's that important. That's how gear ratios work. ;)

Sounds like you're on the right track! Keep up the good research info, mate!

Sorry to interrupt your research, but I was wondering if you had seen this: http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?123785757-oh-millenia-v6(same...
Might have some stuff for sale you could grab on the cheap...

Edit: And I post this because I am SO confused with what you are doing now...I don't know what KLSKJHGH8391 or KLFGSAKIFHJAH76932002 you are going with, and its accompanying pieces and parts! Good luck, I am following closely and let me know if you need any specific, special tools. I can probably even work something out to lend you an engine stand for a bit if need be.

Good looking out, Chipmunk! Especially since that cat is local. But the super low prices and total mess and dissaray of his garage make me wonder about the quality of the parts he's selling. If a fella can't take the 15 extra seconds to write his name legibly it makes me wonder what else he has rushed or is impatient about. Yes, I'm just that anal when buying used parts. Haha.

And whenever Kevin decides to get his freakin motor off of Phens engine stand I will probably be using that for the winter (if it's okay with Phen, of course). But thanks for the offer, buddy. :)

You can pick up a used engine stand on craigs for like 30-40$, and most of the hill billies that have them have the big fat ones for their v8's, so I guess more is more, right?

Nice find, James! I don't think it would hurt to go and poke around and see one of the engines in person, Evan, and you can always take off the valve covers and check the condition of stuff, pull the plugs, look at the piston heads, etc. That stuff is pretty dirt cheap, (I think he's wrong about the milly motor having the ZE heads, though, at least if it's stock) so even if you could pick up a few pieces for a preliminary setup or something, I dunno. I'd probably end up getting too excited and buying a bunch of extra stuff and then have a garage full of goodies, which is similar to your current predicament. :)

WTF do we need another engine stand for? It's not like I was using it back at my parent's house anyway. It was just sitting there taking up space. My dad may have wanted it for the M30 motor sitting in the garage, but I don't see him messing with that anytime soon.

Sounds like you're getting all the ducks in a row. Opening a transmission isn't too bad and with how anal you are, it will only be time consuming. (Meaning, it could be a total b**** if you don't label things well when you disassemble.) Swapping cams is quite a bit easier.

LSD would be highly recommended... unless you like burning off the inside tire going around a turn. I do it a lot with my P5, even when running good tires. With that much extra power, it's only going to be worse. You won't have the pleasure of breaking tires loose as much as Kris did, so any little bit to help control it will be nice.

Want a RWD example of an LSD... take Wes' car out and dump the clutch at 5k rpm. Watch the one tire spin its ass off. Take mine out, do the same (hold on for dear life) and notice that both tires spin for about 2 seconds.

Oh... can I please help????? I promise that I can adopt your style of working. Haha.

I think mine actually may be welded. It kinda hops and makes weird jerks when I back it up in my driveway on gravel at full lock. I popped the clutch in my buddies all gravel driveway and both tires went, immediately, with no lag, unlike his Blazer with a locker that had one tire spinning a half foot sooner than the other. I've got the A package, baby! Does a viscous dif go immediately like that?

Anyway, Evan, this seems to be on the more affordable end of LSD's. Quaife is a good brand from what I've heard, and this one was listed for 980$ as opposed to the 1800$ I saw for Proteges and stuff (I think those are for the FS specifically?)

I'm not sure if you'd run into clearance issues on the underside with potentially different suspension and bracing designs than the Probe. Call em!

Thanks for the info, guys. I was just pondering, with a KL-G4 w/ bolt ons I'm shooting for about 150whp. I asked Levi and Pablo if they had LSD's in their 3's and apparently only the Speed3's have them. I mean, it would be nice but I'll have to look into prices. $1000 for an LSD is about the same price I'll be picking up a G4. Ouch. I know the Solotege cat has a welded MSP LSD and mentioned how the car feels weird around turns. So basically the wheels will always both spin at the same speed, right? I just keep picturing that Miata at the Sonic meet last year screeching tires while slowly turning in a small radius. Or was that something else (broken?), Phen?

And I'm too intimidated to open the tranny. I'll probably just take it to that tranny shop in Silver Lake and ask them to inspect/clean it for me. I found one on eBay w/ 75k miles on it for $375 I might snag from an MX-6.

And it's a bonus working at a shop with a dock and forklift. I can save on shipping and just bring it home with my friends van. :)
I've got a lot more research to do now. Haha! But I dig it. It's like treasure hunting in the comfort of my own home.

DO NOT weld a fwd dif... If you do, forget about tracking your car, it will be a 1/4 slut and that's about it. Even the guys that weld them in 240's and stuff it's just for drifting. They're awesome for drifting because it's totally predictable, it's exactly the same every time it breaks free. But in FWD you will lose all ability to handle. It's a short cut, like using aluminum siding to patch rust...

Does the MX6 tranny have the longer 5th gear?

A good LSD will allow some slippage so you don't wear out your tires while turning but is supposed to lock the axles together if one wheel is spinning much faster than the other. If an LSD always keeps the axles locked together then it's broken or a piece of crap :P

Yeah, that NA at the Sonic meet had a welded LSD. As you could tell... it isn't good for anything but quarter miles and drifting... and that little 1.6 isn't going to do much drifting any time soon.

There is no replacement for displacement

v8 ftw

edit: This new board does not allow you to type in all caps. Just for the record I am screaming this at my computer, at the top of my lungs to you guys...picture it....

It's not bad in the rain.. with bald tires.

When I'm home, remind me to take you for a ride in the MSM in the rain on 59. I spend half the time pushing the clutch in and out to get traction... even in 4th. One day I turned on to 59 (not sure where I was coming from) and the back kicked out shifting to 3rd, so I was feathering it up the road sideways for a rather sizable distance...

You should really get some wider tires, I think. I was struggling to comprehend how anyone goes after higher output numbers than what you've got, and then I remembered that some of the guys that track theirs have 275's..

I busted out the back of mine in the 14/44 intersection on the shift to 2nd on your 5Zig's, but I was trying to. It was pretty sketchy when the back walked out, I think in 3rd, the same day at the bottom of that big swoop on River Road by your house. Levi was right behind me..

But I'm definitely game for a ride in Lindsey! :)

I'd love to go wider tires... but you can't do it easily on the 17" wheels. 215's is as wide as I can go and not rub. Eventually I'll go wider wheels and tires combined...
