LED bulbs in tail lights.

Has anybody put LED bulbs in their taillights instead of buying the whole assembly? I want to make my tails as bright as possible since I want to smoke them as dark as possible while still keeping the visibility up. Let me know thanks.

I haven't seen someone use just LED bulbs. If you do choose to do this, make sure you put load resistors on both the brake lights and turn signals. Otherwise, your turns will flash faster than normal (similar to if you had a burnt out bulb), and your cruise control may not work because of improper resistance for the brake light circuit.

Wow, nice post. I never even thought about that.

That's the electrical engineer in me coming out. That's also why I'd spend the $400 on the LED tails, since you have a PnP solution that doesn't compromise the OEM controls. Load resistors aren't tough to install, just an inline splice, but it's not warranty-friendly.

thanks tunersteve, just hoping for a quick, easy, and cheap solution to brightening up those tails, but usually those three cause bad problems lol. Thank you for your insight though :)

Glad I could help. I'm a big fan of LEDs and looked into them back when I bought the car. In terms of an effective solution for what you want to do, I think your best bet would be the CAR-LED tails and some smoked vinyl overlays for them. 100% reversible, and they look amazing.

yea i was planning on doing the vinyl overlays and just wanted keep the brightness up so the idiots behind me don't get too close during the day

Tunersteve, your stating that LED taillights for our car (considering the ones I found on ebay starting at $150) would require a load resistor as well? Or would it only be necessary for replacing the just the bulbs.

No, only if you do LED bulbs, not the taillight housongs.
